In one scene the Police Consul appeared to be missing its nearside headlamp rim. |

Might have been an illusion, I don't know. But this is a Consul 375, with that late model's rear lights. |

Supplied by the Ford Motor Company, as identified by its' 'PU' Essex registration number. According to recent newspaper articles, against all the odds, this car survives fit and well in Scotland. -- Last edit: 2017-08-19 09:05:25 |

On the rear of the Consul boot [trunk], underneath the 'Consul' tag, there is another brightwork plate which could read 'Automatic' or 'Overdrive'. The car is definitely a column gear-shift, as the Inspector is shown starting the car, engaging the gear/drive and moving off. I suppose the plate could read 'De-luxe' as the saloon has two-tone paintwork, with dark paint all over, except for a white roof....and light coloured upholstery and door-cards. |

I do not recall Ford offering an automatic Consul 375, and if there was an overdrive, they didn’t sell many! The additional script was more likely “DeLuxe”. -- Last edit: 2022-03-24 20:43:48 |

This site, Link to "www.automobile-catalog.com" mentions only a 3 speed manual, and no other transmission options. |

I can only find refs for o/drive and auto options on 6-cyl models (Zephyr and Zodiac). Consul only seems to be "three on the tree" manual column change. |

With all of 59bhp available to drag the quite large car around, an automatic would have been glacially slow, and an overdrive probably asking too much. Once Ford began offering the Anglia 105E and Classic/Capri models the logical next step of a four speed box took over. |
