Have you noticed that in every old French film the main characters drive American cars ?

Often indeed! ... in the 50's the "nec plus ultra" for (new)rich or influent people was american cars mostly (Cadillac, Packard, Buick, De Soto, Chevrolet...): ... Industry Captains, Bankers, Lawyers , Artists and show business people, ...and gangsters too ..( though there were well know using big Citroen 15 Six as well)... the fact that US forces were established on french soil explain this statement too (many US cars were brung from american soldiers present at this time) ... gradually at the early 60's , british cars became "the must" with R.Royce, Jaguar, Bentley...followed by luxury german cars in the late 60's and italian sports cars... and US cars almost disappeared from the french automobile landscape till nowadays ( except few Jeep SUV, or Chrysler Voyager and PT ...there are not many)

I always wondered about this, since I don't think there were many American cars in Britain at that time.

I would give this personnal explanation...

British luxury cars industry was quite whealthy at that time, and presented a good panel for customers , while in France luxury cars manufacturers were starving when not diing with pre-war old concept cars (Bugatti, Hispano suiza, Delahaye, Delage, Salmson, Hotchkiss...), then british rich customers could afford or assume their conservative tastes with a national industry still providing efficient good products

I agree with the explanations given by sixcyl and I must say I'm rather surprised to see so many american cars in early 50's french movies.

But in the same time, I've noticed than in these movies, the characters that own american cars are most of the time not so nice. They're wealthy (american cars then mean money), but are either snobs or "bourgeois", or have something to do with the underworld.

Now the only thing I could had to sixcyl explanations is that by the end of the 50's and more and more in the 60's, the DS took the place of american cars in the french movies.

Beautiful shot of the base Clipper for 1953.
Note the side trim of the old '51 to '52 200 design, but coupled with the new grille and rear window contour.
Also note Cormorant hood ornament from the senior series.
