SOS ON. This must be a Midlands Colliery, the bus is one of the pre WWII Midland Red SOS "ON" series of single deckers I think. If the number plate in the right hand rear window can be translated I should be able to provide a more exact date and model. Two more SOS buses face the camera. Buses in the series were Types "ON" "CON" "DON" and "SON" if you can dig out any more images. http://www.bammot.org.uk/vehicles/vgha337.asp The other options are Northern General, and Trent, both of whom bought SOS vehicles off BMMO. The Midland Red designed and manufactured its own buses up to the late 60s from a start in 1923, when it decided that this would be the best way to get the light, fast economical buses it needed. The designs were odd, bordering on weird, but were tough and efficient. -- Last edit: 2014-09-18 16:55:02 |

Sadly, this is the only shot and as clear as I can get it. |

Better leave it just as "ON" by way of a generic title for the whole series, pity as it is probably one of the later ones and I would like to have tried to name the coachbuilder. |

Following further digging amongst the books: - ON is the original 1934 petrol engined bus. CON is a petrol bus converted to diesel with the AEC engine. DON is the bus fitted from new with the AEC 7.7 litre diesel. SON is the bus fitted from new with the SOS, later BMMO, 8.028 litre diesel. Coachbuilders: - Brush: English Electric: Shorts. -- Last edit: 2014-09-11 09:49:19 |
