ET7 with the 4D engine, according to the grille badge.

I think the Standard visible in the background of the third thumbnail is worth listing.

ET7 apparently (aecsouthall.co.uk) applied to diesel versions. Perkins diesels up to the March 1954, then Ford-built 4 cylinder diesel with the first 4D badged trucks. Petrols went from side valve 8 cylinder to 4 cylinder 'cost cutter' petrol engine in November 1953.

'Fordson Thames' name dropped April-May 1950 in favour of 'Thames' but with built by Ford featured in advertising.

edit: Versions as follows
2-Ton van and light truck
3-ton 128-inch wheelbase chassis and cab
3-ton 157-inch wheelbase truck

So does that mean (a) ET6 4D is impossible and (b) we should call all petrol ones ET6 and all diesel ET7 4D??

No, because there was a Perkins Diesel ET7 before the 4D.

Not sure if the 6D was fitted in the bonneted version.

Currently we have 26 Thames trucks plus 19 Fordsons listed as ET6 some of which will also be Perkins diesels or where the front is not seen Ford diesels.

Otherwise we have 21 Thames and 2 Fordsons listed as ET6 4D which more correctly should be March 1954 onwards ET7 4D (or 6D).

In the last year or so the trucks took the 502E/503E?? chassis codes in common with later Ford thinking.

Each one needs reviewing and probably a decision to specify ET6 (i.e. petrol) where its not clear if petrol or diesel is accurate.

Comments or other observations welcome...

edit: The trucks over 4-tons both petrol and diesel were all 6-cylinder so 6D is valid.

I am happy if we decide to continue to use ET6 4D or 6D for diesels as I think ET7 is less well known as a model designation. Its simpler and easier to apply and most people will recognise it.

I'm happy with whatever system is workable and consistently applicable - we can sometimes end up trying to be too clever for our capabilities (ie the extent to which visible clues can be seen in all pictures). While we're here, is there a definitive statement on when it's a Thames instead of a Fordson?

^^^
All adverts after June 1950 consistantly dropped the Fordson name.

edit: Additional model change information.

The side-bonnet chromed 'flash' badge were apparently added with the Ford 4-cylimder "Cost Cutter" petrol and Ford diesel 4D/6D engines November 1953-March 1954. (Unless proved otherwise based on/from Commercial Motor adverts.)

1949 onwards for the three alternating chromed grille bars making an appearance on vehicles. The illustration of the Fordson Thames in September 1949 clearly shows these three chromed highlights on alternating grille bars.

I'd be quite happy to call every one a Thames ET6 or Thames ET7 ( If diesel ).
I know we like accuracy but everyone calls them ET6's in UK anyway. .

If ET6 is the 'common' name then I think we should continue with that for both petrol and diesel.

I agree
If you put Thames ET6 into Google Images you will get hundreds of these trucks .
