New page for the coach after discussion here - /vehicle_710017-Ford-Fairlane-500-1963.html :

johnfromStaffs wrote The coach is a Duple Viceroy, probably (but not necessarily) on a Bedford VAM chassis.

dsl wrote So is the coach worth its own page??

johnfromstaffs wrote IMHO , not unless we could identify the chassis, which is unlikely.

andrepa wrote would decide for Bedford instantly, spent the whole night, looking for this rare bus without success, precisely then it demands an own page! and if it is only, for edged design no other bus that period in UK had

Have left details as unknown to see what ideas it might attract.

This is why I have reservations about guessing chassis manufacturers without good identification. However, I have counted the wheels and it's not a Bedford VAL.

now as it is clearly 2 axle Viceroy, we can concentrate on detail:
1967 Bedford no upper ornamental rippled plate above door tank filler or whatever it is in middle of luggage door Viceroy script that position in Z- decor
http://www.sct61.org.uk/zztpt99e Link to "www.flickr.com"
1971 Ford with rippled plate no filler script moved
https://www.flickr.com/photos/26024754@N07/6955622314/
while AEC Reliance might be identified by straight decor panel no Z-line
Link to "www.flickr.com"
have to keep on checking, if these details are specific for Bedford pre 1971 but can't find other makes yet, a good argument for Bedford TMO, at least pre facelift Viceroy https://www.flickr.com/photos/67089653@N07/8027674677/lightbox/
1971+ Bedford still no rippled plate integrated filler behind door
1969 Bedford with plate but Z-line distintive

1967 Bedford VAM by tank filler cap :)
http://www.travellerhomes.co.uk/?p=8869
no Ford, AEC or whatever seems to have fuel tank that position!

To use minor bodywork characteristics to identify chassis manufacturers is not, in my opinion, a good idea. A company might choose to have the same coach work on, say, the Bedford chassis for local or contract work, and on a heavyweight chassis like AEC or Leyland for continental touring and motorway work. Really the only certain way is by the registration number or the fleet number, but even these can cause trouble.

we are approaching idea it is Bedford, by beeing no heavy chassis, and most numerous! here is a page dedicated to Bedford VAM showing tank filler cap with any bodywork, tmo this "minor" detail is synonymous to Bedford badge.

last step should be (fictive) operator "Grays Coaches" but i know even in one fleet they used to have different makes.

The position of the fuel tank is a result of the chassis design and might be a reliable guide. I don't know if the Ford chassis could have had the fuel tank in a similar position to the Bedford, certainly they both had the engine upright at the front. We can probably eliminate the Reliance as it seems that it was unusual to find it used for a Viceroy body.

Whilst its not conclusive, it does confirm its highly likely it is the Bedford and, unless there was an actual unforseen requirement to move the fuel tank, Duple appear to make its position chassis specific.

Most likely a Bedford.

So have we all settled on Bedford VAM Duple Viceroy?? No reason for Gray's Coaches to be fake - this was probably real footage. Probably a genuine Glasgow, Ayrshire or Lanarkshire company.
