Oct 61 factory plate, a Ford cover advert for the Consul Classic 315. Autocar 29 June 1962 issue apparently featured Le Mans 24 Hours report (8 pages), Hillman Super Minx Convertible (2 pages), DAF Daffodil road test (5 pages); Lotus 25 (3 pages including cutaway drawing) etc in its 96 pages. Price was probably 1/3d = £0.06 in modern money.

Autocar is supposed to have been the world's first ever motoring magazine, founded in 1895. Still going today, but more of a flashy comic full of the latest zoomy cars than a serious magazine. Every issue has the latest BMW/Audi/Jag/Range Rover/Porsche (all of whom have realised that all they need to do is make an announcement about something - usually trivial - each week and it'll get an Autocar feature) and not much else. Sad decline of what used to be a good magazine, but it's still not quite as stupid as Auto Express.

What do you think, dsl. Was it still good in the 80's ? I have such a positive impression as I used to buy it occasionally, particularly in order to be infirmed about the huge ammount of UK cars no more imported to Italy (Vauxhalls for instance). I found it not marvellous but quite good.

In 1950s onwards UK had 2 weekly motoring magazines - Autocar and The Motor. Both were good, accurate and serious - much rivalry between them kept them both good quality. People tended to be loyal to one or other - my dad was Motor so when I started reading them (or at that very young age in 1960s I was only really looking at the pictures) I became a Motor loyalist too. Both stayed good quality through 60s/70s/80s, but merged in 1988 leaving only Autocar on its own. Then in early 1990s disaster hit the UK motoring magazine market - Top Gear Magazine arrived with its flashy trashy zoom-zoom comic-book appeal and became a huge sales success. Everyone else sales plummeted and they stopped trying to be serious (apart from the terminally boring What Car) and became flash-bang-wallop to try to keep up with Top Gear. Autocar was bad enough, but the real tragedy for me was how Car which was superb - probably UK's best mag - descended into pathetic drivel just like the rest of them. I still buy Autocar and Car but more out of habit now. The only well-written car mags here which are still worth serious reading are the classic car sector.

PS in 1895, when Autocar started, there were apparently only 6 or 7 cars in the whole of UK. I wonder how many copies of that first issue were sold, and who bought them?? And what there was to write about in the 2nd issue after the 1st issue had featured each of the seven cars .....

It's possible to replace English magazine names with Italian ones, and the result will be almost the same...

Maybe most people dreamed of owning a car, but could just buy a car magazine.
About Motor, I do remember it well and I often bought it in the 80's. Hard to say that almost the same fate happened to Italian car magazones after the arrive of "Top Gear". Even "Quattroruote" which remains accettable, is much worse than before: for instance, in theyr tests, Much less is written. Almost 2/3 of the pages are only about ads. Sad !!!!!
