A truly vile car, and thankfully Clarkson shares the same opinion as me. This is the first car to be destroyed in this release, and the car is disposed of by using two models in an unusual game of conkers - this same stunt was also replicated in Top Gear in a game of caravan conkers. One of the FSOs is also dropped from a height at the end of the stunt :D

Well, he (Clarkson) said that it is NOT the worse handling car in the world and is even better than... Corvette :p - it means that FSO is pretty COOL car! :o ;)
BTW. 1989?! And still with old front and rear end! Very strange model. :D

There aren't plenty of that export version Polonez's! And he destroyed them!

I do not find it especially ugly. I would not say that it looks good, but there are so many cars that I find less interesting than the FSO Polonez...

This one was actually in pristine condition before Jeremy Clarkson got his hands on it. Not much of a loss though, as it's a pretty awful car. Not the worst from the Eastern Bloc car however. That award goes to the Trabant.

hi all i think mr.G-MANN like his citizen clarckson stereotypes (let me use FCK exp) for the all English cars , but they forgot that non of english cars are used outside england (may be littel few cars like jaguar , land rover) , but even those producers are going to have investment from tata motor India :) , see every episode of top gear you will find mr clarkson bring the english cars in top of famous brands like BMW wich is not true at all , i'd like to tell that i own a fso polonez for nearly 3 years now and my father have one from about 13 years both are 1989 model and they are aple to work for another 20 years , can any new car hold this time ????? i doubt ! my brother draged with 1.5 l polonez with 1978 BMW 315 and he cracked the BMW , even BMW 1.5l engine produces 78hp and polonez 1.5l 82hp ,my friends with 2.0l polonez smocks any new car brand and it's true !!!! this car how it looks or how it perform it was a creative design that many car manufacturers produced cars with the same look (chevorlet, nissan,VW, etc...), in Egypt we produced this car from 1987 till 1992 mass production.
and by the way i think that old peasant arabs produced basic scinces that the english people learned and developed after and the all wroled are live on it now (but we should study some history first ;) )

@hashad: welcome! :hello:

I think, actually you are the only active Egyptian here (@Antoine: am I right?)

To the stereotypes about cars and their owners: In the usual German opinion in the 70ies ad 80ies Britsh made cars weren't much better than Polish, Russian or other COMECON-made ones, except Rolls Royce and the robust Range Rover. Just in the last years, it was getting better. Jaguar got a better reputation, Rover a little bit, too (only for the cars, where the BMW-influence was a bit bigger).

Egypt, mainly Cairo is a very interesting location for old -and still running- cars. At first everyone should make the experience to take a ride in a real "classic" Cairoan Peugeot 504-taxi. Unforgettable.

In 2000, when I've been there, I saw a plenty of interesting old cars - and except a few Bedford-trucks I cannot remember British ones. ;)
In Hurghada was an abandoned 1951 Opel Olympia just standing around next to the shopping area. Annother car had irritated me because of its selfmade front and back. I needed a bit time to recognize that it was a Ford 17 M P3. In Cairo a Borgward Isabella had passed our bus, followed by a VW 411. But -ahem, you guys know why- I was a bit disappointed not to see a K 70. :/
I've heard, that a few shall still exist over there.

@hashad: a special question to an Egyptian car-freak: is anything know about a Ramses? Is any car still existing?

I've never seen a Polonez with these headlights before.

Weasel1984 PL

2008-11-12 17:42

They weren't very common indeed - here were available since about 1981 to 1986/87 in really poor C-trim level
and also in the well equipped "LE"
Short lived first generation's pickups - (Polonez Truck) had these headlights as well.

Hashad - wasn't Polonez built before 1987 in Egypt, but from the CKD kits (same like 125p)?
Btw. You have indeed in Egypt a huge diversity of cars, would be cool to have some pics from the Egyptian movies. :D

CKD parts commnly used from 1987 till 1989 after that according to some national laws we were have to made 40% of any car assemled in egypt local parts like winshields chairs carpets some metal parts or plastics but engine was totaly imported , for the 125p at end of its production main block of engine was manufacured in egypt " NASR company " check it out on wikipedia ,
i'll try hard to get you some pictures from movies polonez appeared widly but the problem i'll start to search for pc movies to get such shots

@hashad: Years ago I found on grandmothers attic old youth magazine from the 60ies, in one was an article about a Ramses - and for many years it was the only thing I've ever read about this Egyptian car. Even the most NSU-fans didn't know, that it has existed. This is the second reason: as a long-time-K 70-freak you are getting obligatorily some NSU-knowledge. ;)

A few more informations about the Ramses I've found in that book:
http://www.gege-nsu.de/nsuprinz/ge-nsu/treffen/inhalt.htm I know the writer and editor (I've helped him with the K 70-chapter).

The factory was planned in Giza in 1961. The manufacturer was the "Egyptian Automotive Co. Sharia Kasr El Nil-Kairo. They started with the Ramses-production (an open Jeep, a Pick Up and a Sedan in two versions, old and facelifted). It was not a mass-production: 1963/64: 300 units
1965: 405 units
1966: 95 units
1967: 244 units
1968: 195 units
1969: 1027 units
In 1971 they'd planned for 1972 5000 cars, but it's unknown, if they reached it. In 1973 the NSU-based production was stopped.

To coming back to topic: it's also written, that later on in this factory were assembled, between other brands, also Fiat's, Seat's and Polonez(!). Also Opel Corsa and Ascona.

A propos Fiat: it isn't the same factory, where the several Fiat-models were assembled? We had this discussion about Egyptian Fiats somewhere else, too, but I cannot find the thread again.

About Ramses cars:
http://www.geocities.com/mdbois/ramses.html

Welcome to hashad on this site :)

I've been in Egypt , 25 years ago ... I spent a month there and visited many places (From El-Alamein to Charm-El-Cheir, from Ismaelia to Assouan + Luxor and Cairo of course ...
I saw many intersesting vehicles there and used many time bus or taxis (the 504 Familiale !... THE "taxi collectif")
I remember some local made or turkish made Mercedes Benz O302 in my journey to Sinaï , I remember the ultra-modern airconditionned Neoplan Pullman used on the line Cairo <=> Alexandrie, I remember the Renault S53 with specific export body used in Alexandrie, blue/white,always packed full of people, I remember the buses in Cairo (El-Nasr ?) assaulted by people and some mens even climbing on through the windows :D ....
but my special "cars souvenirs" was in Damiette , and its so so special taxis :
[Image: taxidamiettebuickeighthq3.9926.jpg] [Image: taxidamiettefordin3.4435.jpg]

There was some genuis of mechanics :king: in this town who had transformed many old american cars for use as taxi, but the originality was about the engines: all the old gazoline V8 having been replaced by DIESEL Marine engines normally used to power boats :D (see the bonnet openned on the left thumbnail) ... you can imagine the incredible sound in Damiette streets when these vehicles were passing by ... it was [Image: top2.gif]

Had you heard of these taxis Hashad? ... what happen to them till now? ...

hi sixcyl 25 years ago i was 3 years old :) , but i can tell you , all this great cars were used in the agriculture countries around cairo and in upper egypt because of two things 1st those cars can hold any road or working inviroment ( roads were very bad early in such contries) 2nd the ecnomical status of cairo was always higher than other contries so change over rate of cars was high , i saw some few cars like it but was scraped :/ in the streets and i used me and my crew to stand beyond it and admire that beautiful machines , and i waish in one day i'll have the mony and the place to rebuild this cars

I read recently that there are fewer than 20 original right hand drive FSO Polonez left in the UK.

Trabantino FR

It was designed by FIAT for the Polish market and presented in 1978 with this body type. The rectangle headlights indicate a low cost version (the de luxe had 4 round headlights)...and remember the Fiat Ritmo. Now you know where the style comes from! This one is for sure an early 1980s.

Weasel1984 PL

2009-04-17 14:21

These headlights were indeed used mainly in the cheapest versions, but not only - sometimes you could meet them also in the better equiped ones (well actually the short lived 1970's 125p Lux had rectangular headlights as well).
The car here, by the windows in the last pillars can't be older than 1986 (even if it is rather strange that doesn't have the 1983 front spoiler). On the other hand I was always suprised that it is from the 1989, as such front end was not used in any hatchback since 1987 (maybe only in the domestic market).
To be exact it wasn't designed by Fiat, but of course used its technic.

I agree. :) It had side mirrors screw to door panels, typical way for pre-1983 FSO Polonez.

* * *
I'm keeping friend's 1982 Polonez 1500 Standard in my garage. Exactly this one: http://www.youngtimer.pl/galeria/225.html
With all papers, keys and good words "Keep'em running time to time!" I do.

In many points Clarkson was right.

Definitely Polonez is "he", not "she".
Needs man hand, like large dog on a walk.
Hard to move steering wheel and gear stick.
Even Skoda Estelle feel much delicate & precise thing.

On curves Polonez understeers hardly (with neutral or closed throttle) or oversteers [when pushing hard] - true!
Polonez is the best reviewer of driver skills. If you keep them of perfect line, apply throttle carefully, move steering wheel gently, you could "defeat" all curves neutral and quite fast.

Clonking gearbox? No! Gear stick has strange working geometry.

Engine doesn't feel like 75 KM? - true. But has lot of low/medium-rpm torque and nicely sounds with metal hoarse.

Polonez has cream-plush sunvisors & roof "carpet", fire-brown fabric-cowered soft seats, tachometer, electric clock, many chrom stripes, even oil pressure gauge! In standard form with Ford Fiesta Mk I 1.1 price! And all this things work well still.

So, Polonez is really fun to drive. Looks like last 70s, drives like early 60s. Modern face with dated hardware. :P

Even back in 1997, only 616 examples of the "Leisure" version were still registered. Nowadays there are no examples left on the road, with 1 declared SORN, however, i don't know if it's RHD or LHD. For some reason, Polonez Leisure exists in DVLA database as "Polonez SCE".
I think antp will agree with me, going out of your way to find 2 examples of something extremely rare and soon to be extinct, only to blow them up is utterly, utterly pathetic.
