PN9023, a Humber (Saloon). The vehicle details for PN 9023 are: Date of Liability 01 04 2014 Date of First Registration 26 03 1932 Year of Manufacture 1932 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 3418cc Vehicle Colour BLUE 1932 Humber Snipe 80 by the (inaccurate/approximate) DVLA quoted engine size 3418cc. The actual 1932 Humber Snipe 80 engine was a 23.5 HP side-valve Six of 3495cc. |

If it is accepted that the registration and year are correct, and a check from a source other than the DVLA would appear to corroborate this, then the only two chassis designs built by Humber in the years 1932 to 1935 are the Twelve, which was a medium sized 4 cylinder car, and the 16/60 and Snipe 80 and Pullman on the same larger chassis with six cylinder engines and available in 10ft 4in wheelbase for the first two variants and 11ft 0in wheelbase for the Pullman. If the Twelve is eliminated, and the 2.3 litre 16/60 is also eliminated, then Snipe 80 seems a good choice. My source book of Rootes Group cars says 3,498cc for the larger engine, so does Wiki, so a typo could explain the DVLA 3,418cc. The only other question is, has the car an 11 foot wheelbase and therefore becomes a Pullman? Link to "www.google.co.uk" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humber_Snipe I think not. -- Last edit: 2014-01-18 16:37:38 |

It seems to be a "Landaulette" with folding rear roof - http://nice-reg.co.uk/number-plates/PN9023.html and http://car-from-uk.com/sale.php?id=12344&country=uk (several photos) "A very nice and rare 1932 humber landaulette saloon, blue and cream... the rear roof folds down. it has a centre partition. it has a 3418cc humber 6 cylinder petrol engine with a 4 speed manual gearbox. its happy at 40-50mph. it has covered 55686 miles with 4 previous owners. it has its original registration number PN 9023......." |

Good find dsl! So Snipe 80 or Pullman? I'm guessing its on the shorter Snipe 80 chassis as "Pullman" is not in the sales information but with the centre partition is that possible? |

A 10ft 4inch wheelbase is 4 inches longer than a Bentley MkVI/Royce Silver Dawn chassis, so yes, it's possible, bearing in mind that this car does not have a built in luggage locker robbing space from the passenger compartment. The back seat backrest will be immediately inside the back panel, so there would be room for a division, and possibly rearward facing jump seats as well. -- Last edit: 2014-01-19 12:27:46 |
