I was thinking '55-56 Mercury or maybe a Packard. -- Last edit: 2006-11-15 00:50:27 |

Not the clearest. The rear top window and taillights are quite large.Could be a 1954 Lincoln Capri Convertible but would need more details. |

Here's a (slightly) cleaner shot I got off of a local TV station: |

I looked at a much higher resolution image from the Highway Patrol opening title sequence and this is without question a 1954 Lincoln. You can tell by the shape of the bumper guards that angle down and in toward the center and run into the lower cross-bar on the bumper (a very unique bumper!), the taillights, the insignia on the trunk and, last but not least, the word LINCOLN on the bumper in large letters. I can almost read the license number of the California plate. You can tell it is a California plate if you were watching cars in the 50s like I did. Anyway, it's a '54 Lincoln without a doubt. |

This car opens every episode, but strangely, appears nowhere else in the series. (please correct me if I'm mistaken!) The circumstances surrounding the intro are left entirely to the imagination. Kudos on this still photo: if a single frame were chosen as a signature piece for the whole series, it would be this one. A lonely '54 Lincoln, traveling down a new freeway with a Highway Patrol roadblock barely visible around the bend. Note the driver straddling lanes. Why? Note the fresh skid marks beside him. Probably from a truck & trailer, likely traveling empty judging from the broken right double marks. Conjures intrigue and memories every time I see it. -- Last edit: 2014-04-06 18:00:22 |
