:/ Is the fact that I was taught German almost 60 years ago by a Viennese any excuse?

I see...Well, there is not a big difference between Austrian and "hochdeutsch". So I'd say: Link to "i1122.photobucket.com" Sorry. :/

Or the shortened slang-version "Ist mir egal"
 "ist's" is not correct German! Otherwise: the modern German orthography became unbearable terrible. It started with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_orthography_reform_of_1996 and became even worse since then with Link to "www.spiegel.de" [:halalala]

Written yes -except some different unique words- but spoken the differences are extreme (but between the many German dialects, too), plus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanake
Swiss German has more differences (my Swiss favourite -although I understand less than 1/3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfL_IRXVLtQ )
But not only the Austrian German is different, also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoqORos_1WA :D (a persiflage of this social clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AerZ0VdwXA )

Also in the common life all around in Germany you have to be aware about your speaking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECWoPwPK864

In case of doubt you have learned the most correct German syntax back then. It became much worse...

Btw.: we had to learn British English in school in the 80ies, my mother in the late 50ies was even drilled for classic Oxford English.
