This is a plain Opel Olympia [P] 1958-59, it lacks all chrometrim. It could possibly be a 1960-62 Opel 1200 or 1500, they did have an almost straight chromeband over the side. This car does probably not have that.

Sorry Richard, but I don't understand exactly what you mean... If it is a simplified model, then it is an Opel 1200 1960-62, otherwise it should be Olympia Rekord according to the doc I have

Well it´s not crystalclear with the naming of these Opels, so that´s understandable, but before the 1200/1500 was introduced the stripped version was called Olympia, 1955-59.

Olympia and Rekord are separate series from 1955 models and on, when the plain basic Olympia appears as a budget car. But Opel is a bit ambivalent in the use of the Olympia name on the Rekord series, it seems to differ a bit on different markets. On the 1953-54 models it´s definately Olympia Rekord, 1955 the Olympia name comes off the cars and in the brochures Olympianame is downsized and focus lies on Rekord. Except in german brochures. But Olympia is kept on the dashboard or the glovebox door until 1966 on all standard Rekords. Looking in registry documents and sales statistics from Sweden they are just Rekord from 1955 models and up. Same with non-german sales literature 1955-57, Olympia is dropped.

It seems that the Olympianame was degraded to the base models, the Caravans and Delivery vans. After what I can find all Caravans and Deliveryvans carry Olympia badges up till 1962 models [P2], regardless trimlevel. Rekordname is never used on a Caravan until the Kadett Caravan appears, then at first it was necessary to add the name. In sales literature the cars are only referred to as Caravan.

From 1958 models even german sales literature dropped the Olympia name from the Rekord cars and it´s only used on the budget version, like the one on the picture here.

This car was called Olympia in the base version, and Olympia-Rekord in the posh version, and nothing else, as it has always been at Opel. The Opel 1200 was introduced later to replace the Olympia, i.e. the Olympia was discontinued in its favour. Daf555 is entirely correct in stating that Opel wagons were simply called Opel CarAVan, until it became necessary to add the model designation when wagons became available in more than one series. Some Opels were also available as panel deliveries based on the wagons, these had no model designation whatsoever until that became necessary for the same reason as with the wagons.
The car in the picture is the base version, so to bring it into consistency with the common IMCDB practice to name the earliest 'incarnation' of any given car when the year of manufacture is unkown, the now selected Opel Olympia (P1) is entirely correct.

No, the Rekord with this body is not Olympia Rekord. Olympia is being phased out from 1955 models, check out this link under car brochures: http://www.opel-p1.nl/

In the original sales material it is evident that it´s the case, but on german brochures between 1955-57 you can still see both names on the covers. But in running text there´s no mention of the Olympia name at all and Rekord is standing with capital letters everywhere. Opel did change from Olympia to Rekord, but they went over a double name and after that they kept an emblem with Olympia on the dashboard for 11 years. That´s what´s causing the confusion I guess.
Checking price lists from the time, the cars from 1955 are simply Rekord. There are some on the link above too, from 1958-60 though. Most contemporary tests say Rekord, with a few exceptions.

It took some time to get the new name established, and it´s still confusing fifty years later :)

So pre 1953: Olympia. 1953-54: Olympia Rekord. 1955-59 Rekord or Olympia

In the 1958 Sales Catalog I have it is called Oplympia in the base version and Olympia-Rekord (including the hyphen) in the posh version. This is a German
brochure issued by Opel Häusler in Munich. I will now check contemporary photos I have for script plates. It would be interesting if these cars were really called different things at random. How very Opel that would be.
