This car is shown as a 1951 Bentley Mk VI 4 1/2 litre. How do you know this, from the photograph it could be a Mk VI 4 1/4 litre or just possibly an R-type. |

In this case it works, but there are many instances of cars in films which have false numberplates attached. I see this as a form of amusement, nothing more. |

Yes, it works more well than letting people guess the model. I have hade models changed because of the grille of a car on a model where people often change grille to make it look like that model. So the best way is to use the plate number if possible. False plates are easily recognized by me as the model seldom fits. Or the colour. Or the plate doesn't exist at all. This is amusement for me too. Why else would I watch a TV-series in 318 episodes (other than memories from childhood that is) and take screenshots of all visible vehicles + check the plates? .gif ":)") We all have our way of amusement. I like to watch for cars in movies and post them here (as I like databases) We both can find it here. |

I didn't say you're guessing (maybe you do in the first comment here btw), but some people do and they actually made the admin change the model by stating that it was a so and so model, when I knew it wasn't. What I'm trying to say is that we all find our joy here in different ways. You, by trying to find the model, and me by help building up the database. |

The car above carries the radiator design that was common to the later Mk VI and the earlier R-types, one of which I happen to have owned for 29 years. The angle of the photograph foreshortens the rear wing so that it just might have been an R-type, although it does seem to have the Mk VI type spats. It also appears to have a similar design of wheel trim to those fitted to my R-type, which I know to be original to my car. Without a clear view of the sheet metal to the rear of the back doors, you cannot, from a photograph such as this, tell the two cars, late Mk VI and R-type Standard Steel Saloons, apart. In respect of 4 1/4 and 4 1/2 litre Mk VI cars, you can count the exhaust pipes, if there are two it's the bigger engine. There are many other modifications to the braking system, the electrical system, the heater, the front suspension and the carburettors, not to mention the gearbox, clutch and radiator, both the grille and the heat exchanger, but very few of these are visible in most photographs. Your enthusiasm for maintaining the database is commendable. I was glad to cease such activities when I retired five years ago. -- Last edit: 2013-11-20 21:06:51 |

Thank you. I like your knowledge in Bentleys. Its like me and railways (Especially everything about tracks and such things). So, what you're saying is that this could be a IV or an R, from the photo? If I had more photos of it, you would say it was an IV. But this was only seen for a couple of seconds, and this was the best angle. Good it wasn't de-registered (exported probably) like the other Bentley from the same season. |

At 400% the photograph suggests that the car is indeed a Mk VI as described. The rear wheels have spats, a sort of removable cover, inside the wheel arches. These were not fitted to the R-type which had a completely different rear section.
