Nice find. Has Luton plates (Vauxhall HQ) so could be genuine, but I've no trace of any UK sales reference - a management import (chairman's toy perhaps??) or evaluation car? The PC Cresta was about to die, so they could have been looking at importing a Holden to fill the gap above the FE Ventora?? -- Last edit: 2013-04-27 04:11:22 |

It seems to be a Statesman [HQ]. The problem is whether we list the make as Statesman or Holden. According to Wiki Statesman is a separate marque for these years and I could swear they were listed as one until recently here but are now all under Holden. |

The statesman is a more luxury version of the holden kingswood. -- Last edit: 2013-04-29 13:37:16 (G-MANN) |

.... and an Arrow Minx further back. But I thought it would be rated too b**kgr**nd, so I kept quiet. |

Is this made for England due to backup lights under the bumper? |

Possibly - but if so a one-off modification. Emailed Holden UK Register to see if they had any ideas: "I have never seen this one before and I wasn't aware that there were ever any Statesmans in the UK. Holdens were never officially imported so this would have to be a private import. The Luton registration could mean that it was connected with Vauxhall but I have never come across any records that they ever did evalutions on any Holdens. From the DVLA record it does appear to still exist and would indicate that it is currently SORN'd. Which in turn probably means that it is garaged and hopefully in reasonable condition. Thanks for pointing me to this site. Regards Ken Garner, Chairman Holden UK Register" so the mystery continues. Sunbar - any ideas from your Vauxhall period? |

I know of only one other Holden in use in the 1960s imported by GM Europe. Almost certainly a one-off import by Vauxhall management for evaluation. After an initial period of less than a year it would have gone on general pool car use as it was unlikely to be considered for manager use, then scrapped when uneconomic for continued use. |

I'm afraid it is really, sorry. |

After checking the range between PXD 98L and PXD 116L it appears there was at least one another Holden imported at the same time... The vehicle details for Holden PXD 109L are: Date of Liability 01 10 1984 Date of First Registration 04 09 1972 Year of Manufacture Not Available Cylinder Capacity (cc) 5045cc CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type PETROL Export Marker N Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour CREAM Only three Vauxhalls were also found in the same range so again most likely imported by Vauxhall Motors and scrapped in the mid-1980s. Vauxhall did auction off almost all their ex-factory registered cars at the time but the Holdens would most likely have been scrapped as there was no dealer support available for this model. |

quite a few Holdens over the years were brought by the Australian Embassy - I understand up to 1972-1973 the Aussie Embassy was only allowed to purchase for the use in the UK Australian made vehicles -this restriction was ended after this date hence why there were quite a few of more cheaper Holden Variants like Kingswoods as sedans ; utes and wagons of particularly 1968 HK to 1972 HQ sadly most of these appear to met their fate on UK Banger Circuit from 1998-2004 a great site Banger Maddness that is still up but not been added to some years shows photos and results -I was quite surprised to see an HQ 4 door Priemer featured on the site! For example a 1968 Holden Kingswood 6 cylinder 4 door was for sale in classifieds on Feb 1989 Practical Classics Page 124 Volume 9 Issue 10 needing some work for 450 pounds - its was un-usual in having a dark body (photo side view in black in white) with a pale top the seller was 0787 79217 Sudbury UK The Statesemen however I believe was brought for the General Manager of AC Delco UK as evidence over the years of various Holdens brought in for use a EJ 4 door was brought in 1963 Reg 499 HTM see photo and brief text on 1 Feb 1963 Autocar P204 ; A EH Panel van 1964 in poor condition was 4 sale on Jan 1990 Practical Page 120 Volume 10 Issue 9 no photo but for sale for 199 pounds - we told it had an frontal accident in 1975 and similar van in blue met its demise in 2000-2002 Banger Races interesting a front of EK was displayed at 1961 Earls Court Car Show for Kerrys GB LTD for demo equipment on parts it sold see black in white pic As For Statesmen there was a 1976c HX Statesmen Deville for sale in 1978 or 1980 Autocar but i lost record and the vendor admitted it was ex General Managers Car of AC delco A Much later Statesmen the WB its Caprice form of 1981-1984 was wrongly identified as a US Olds or Buick of the similar period (Holden did raid the spare parts bin of these cars for the design and build of the WB) it was photographed less engine and less its Cadillac like front (Probaby serving time of someones hot rod) see August 2002 Practical Classics #9 Page 86 as for a top model Vauxhall Interesting there was a proposal and prototype made by vauxhall around 1976 to made a lengthened Ventora using a Holden V8 (probably canned because of coming Opel Senator range) although back in 1972 Jim Keemble of Gordon -Keeble fame tried to market a special FD Ventora with V8 Holden power in 1972 of which 1-2 were made and proto was featured in Autocar UK Note the comment "The statesman is a more luxury version of the holden kingswood" not quite true the original models were built on Lwb used in Kingswood Station Wagon and yes the Statesmen was pushed as a seperate line in 1972 itself but exports markets like here in New Zealand (we Briefly assembled the early models too The Deville 308V8) sold them as Holden Statesmen although i do remember attending the 1972 Jim Abbot Show at Wintershow buildings Wellington and brochures just said Statesmen - I think they (holden) felt it was too confusing and Holden was sold as Holden Statesmen after 1972 particularly to export markets (CKD NZ) like New Zealand - Some Statesmens were exported as far as Malta and there is a survior a hQ in black re-powered by a Nissan straight 6 Diesel for sale as of 2014 been stored in a barn for 30 years The most mysterious model and sold only Here in NZ ; Asia and South Africa was Chev 350 Statesmen (Chevrolet badge and larger 350V8) 1972-1978 the rumor was that NZ got a cancelled export market shipment of cars around 100-150 destined to Asia and the sell off was so successfully here that more was ordered - You will not find anything on the net about them ... the Dealer was perhaps Ebberts who over years has brought in a array interesting vehicles as cancelled export order orders and RHD for other markets these include a 2000c Holden Calais with a 2.5 Opel V6 (Model sold here were a Bigger 6 and V8s) and of cause the UK Shipment of Cadillac CTS V6 sedans that we got during the 2011 Financial crisis! -- Last edit: 2015-01-06 22:26:11 |

Maybe some backstory for Vauxhall bringing in evaluation Holdens for the Cresta/Viscount (PD) project - which it seems could have been sold in US as Pontiac; although cancelled in 69 so too early for this one, maybe Vauxhall liked to keep the kettle warm. |

I didn't get the ball in the net with this idea, but it hit the inside of the post before bouncing back out ... This account goes initially in a different direction by covering the one-off (or maybe two-off) Vauxhall "Black Prince" prototype(s), built in "1971 on Ventora FD(s) for Vauxhall by Gordon Keeble sports cars as a proof of concept with a 327 Chevy engine (near enough 5.3 litres) 4 barrel carb high comp etc as used in the Corvette really, and ZF 5 speed gearbox (plus an automatic in the rumoured 2nd car), and a bunch of special features including a Sony 4 band radio which was removable from the dash and usable as a portable radio, aux dials, Lucas Square 8 fog lights, a matt black bonnet, dash mounted ice detector, map lights and other goodies. The Vauxhall Griffin badges were replaced with Gordon Keeble's tortoise logo.". Sadly, the definitely known example - STR 933H - was broken up in about 1989 to provide the oily bits for a Cobra replica. We've identified this vehicle using the details you provided VAUXHALL VENTORA Registration number: STR 933H Body type: Saloon Colour: Silver Date of first registration: November 1969 ✗ Untaxed Tax due: 1 November 1985 Date of last V5C (logbook) issued 10 December 2013 However it comes back into focus here with the comment that "Vauxhall did do a V8 FE (6 or 8 were built) these were badged up as Viscounts and were killed off by the fuel crisis. They used a 4.4 Holden supplied V8 and that's the reason Big Bertha was built, originally it was intended to race that to promote the FE Viscount." So there was some definite collaboration between Vauxhall and Holden in around 1972 as a backcloth to this one arriving here. |
