This scene was based on the attempted murder of Forrest Bondurant who assaulted by two men one night in 1930. Like in the scene, the assault occurred at the Bondurant restaurant and according to Forrest Bondurant's great nephew and author, Matt Bondurant, Forrest did end up with his throat slit and walked 12 miles to the nearest hospital.
