It's the L.A.D. cab, and it's a bit difficult to spot from this distance, but I'd go for the D myself, since there seem to be five blobs above the radiator grille that could spell D O D G E. -- Last edit: 2012-11-27 14:00:24 |

A good selection of LADs here - http://www.flickr.com/groups/977264@N24/pool/33539563@N07/ - hopefully enough to sort out this one and maybe some others as well. -- Last edit: 2012-11-27 18:33:23 |

That's useful. I'd say that this is a Dodge, as the lower part of the grille seems to be split. |

1957 Thames Trader. They were made by Ford England 1957-65 -- Last edit: 2012-11-29 09:56:10 |

Sorry, no way is this a Thames Trader; it's definitely an LAD, almost certainly a Dodge. Traders (of either mark) all had a prominent horizontal bar in the grille, and the front of this one's cab is too flat. |

I don't know lorries much, but agree LAD and not Trader. Have returned it to Dodge - is LAD a useful insert for chassis? Can anyone give a start date - idly browsing the photo links above, it looks as if the split lower grille was only an early feature?? |

Yes. Seems the LAD-cabbed Dodge was introduced in 1957. The split grille only survived until 1958, but that's guesswork based on Google Images. |

The LAD refers only to the cab, not the chassis. The cab was a combined effort for use by Leyland Albion and Dodge (the L A D) and built by the Motor Panels offshoot of Rubery Owen but I cannot find for certain whether in Coventry or Wigan or both. Prior to this design, the manufacturers had used their own coachbuilt cabs but needed to have a more modern pressed steel/welded design to keep up with the mass market, Bedford and Ford mainly, and collaborated to amortise the tooling investment three ways. The LAD cab was also known as the Vista-Vue, and was replaced on Leylands and Albions by the Ergomatic, also used by AEC.
