Jim Clark/Jimmy Melia works entry on the 1966 RAC Rally. Apparently he insisted on a proper co-driver to enable a full bore attempt, with the implication that he disapproved of other F1 racing colleagues who were happier to participate as celebrity stunts. The outcome was spectacular and they set several fastest stage times and may even have temporarily led the rally, before two large accidents, and #8/NVW241C retired as a write-off. However the publicity was huge, and hardly any impact registers today that team-mates Söderström/Palm emphatically won the rally in #11/NVW239C by over 13 minutes. The accepted account is that NVW241C was scrapped afterwards due to the damage, but there are unverified claims that the wreck still survives hidden away as the Holy Grail of historic Lotus Cortinas. |
