From 1989 Volvo 740 had different (slightly bigger) break callipers, and thus had to have 15" rims instead of 14" as earlier.
This one has the 1989+ plastic hubcaps instead of the earlier stainless ones.

I don't know how old you are, but I was very interested indeed in cars, espesially around the time I took my driving licence in 1989.
Because of that I know that Sweden on the 1st day of January 1989 introduced a law that in reality made it compulsory with catalytic exhaust cleaning. Cars didn't have to have catalyst in particular, but that was by far the easiest way to come around the toughened demands on exhausts.

This was by no means a straight forward decision, among other reasons because many petrol stations, e.g. in rural areas and especially abroad, couldn't provide 95 octane petrol.

As a result of all this, car firms didn't change the model year after the July-August industrial holidays, as usual, but continued the 1988 production until 31st of December, that is without catalyst, resulting in the model year 1988 to be the most common year model in Swedish car history, being produced a year and a half from August 1987.
The models sold from August until December was called model 1988B (=Bravo).

That was a long explanation to explain that both of us were right; this should have been a 1989 model, but is in fact a 1988B.

The ordinary car I'm driving is a 1988 Volvo 740 GLE with chassis number of roughly 265.000.
I know for sure that many parts in my car is stamped in March 1988 which means the car should have been assembled around late March early April that year, especially as Volvo at that time boosted they had stopped having stores for parts, but had something they called "just-in-time" part delivery.

The car pictured has a chassis number of roughly 65.000 more than my car.

In 1987-88 Volvo made 102.604 4-Door sedans, and 60.353 Estates. That is roughly 13.600 cars a mounth.

If I count rightly the car in the above picture should have been made in roughly August/September 1988 as a 1988B, although it has a B230F engine (catalyst) (VIN number 88, after YV1 744).
That corresponds with the letter O in the beginning of the number plate.

I insist this is not just any 1988, but a 1988B.

Yes, I totally forgot about the 88B...A friend of mine had a 745 Turbo 88B with catalytic converter.
