THis is the 1981 Dodge Diplomat, used by the California Highway Patrol with the 318ci 4-bbl carb engine produced by Chrysler Corp. The CHP Diplomats were very useful and the best squads used in america during the 80s. The problem with this car is that CHP always required dual black colored spotlights and dual push bumperwithout the support bar, and the antenna is always on the left side.

CHMSL makes this one at least 1986-1989. i'm not familiar with the steering wheel changes over the years, that might even limit the yearrange futher.

Depending on the steering wheel on this car, we could narrow it down to either a 1986, a 1987-early 1988 model, or a late 1988-1989 model. Was more of it visible? Any more of it at all?

Okay. Well call me obsessive but I found the clip of this scene on youtube and based on what I saw, I was able to rule out the 1988-1989 steering wheel with the air bag. Meaning that this car is within the 1986-early 1988 year range.

I seriously doubt it's a retired CHP vehicle. CHP cars had a different push bar and two black spotlights. Although this one doesn't look terribly off.

its probably a mothballed CHP cruiser that had the pushbars and lights removed, and replaced with a Jetsonic, which the CHP never used.
Seems to have official plates.

Why is it so hard to believe that it could have simply belonged to another of the countless departments that also used Diplomats before being used in this movie? Retired CHP cruisers usually maintain equipment such as spotlights and push bars, so I wouldn't bet at all that this was at one point a CHP car. And the CHP's standard light bar from about 1983-1991 was the Jetsonic. The official plates are probably just props.

Yes. Fake plate.
