CGI, and pretty terrible CGI to boot. Fingers crossed that the trailer footage hasn't had the full post-production treatment yet.

Hmm. Are you sure that it is CGI? Looks pretty real to me.

Part of it is CGI, part of it isn't. Note the absence of shadows under the excavator tracks and under the Beetles. More likely than not, the actual shot was done without the bugs with a steel mount supporting the excavator.

I wonder if this was filmed at the Nene Valley (as was Octopussy). Not quite the rolling stock I'd expect them to have on hand, but not out of the question either. Might yield a behind-the-scene shot.

This was filmed in Adana in Turkey:

I think that this is CGI but close-ups of the digger's arm will be real. In the behind the scenes video the digger is just sitting on the deck of a flat car coupled to the carriage that it's gouging open. That carriage, by the way, is "made for movie", just a freight car with extra windows added.

They left the walkways on the boom in the movie... that's so convenient for James Bond :-p

Not so many CGI: the caterpillar was well modified, it ran on tracks (hidden by CGI I guess), the VW were pre-cut. The rear of the wagon was CGI though.

Indeed, the Caterpillar is not CGI, rather the VW Beetles (also real) are CGI inserted underneath the Caterpillar to "hide" the ramp its setting on.

That's the feeling that I have when watching the movie, but I've read in an article (interview with those who worked on the movie) that the Beetles under it were real, but pre-cut so they would crush as wished...

That's exactly how I feel about the new "beetle". Same for the new "Mini", etc.

Notice the excavator cab looks a little weird... The 320D cab is always on the left side, but they customized this one to move the cab to the right side. Link to "www.caterpillar.com"

Quote In this case, the customization involved something unique – putting the cab on the opposite side of the 320D L as requested by EON Productions, the James Bond production company.

“The cab switch, required for the location of the shoot and interaction between characters, took several months of pre-planning,” said Robert Woodley, Caterpillar Communications Manager for Europe, Africa, Middle East and the CIS. “The biggest challenge involved changing the electronics and hydraulics to accommodate the cab on the other side of the machine. Ultimately, two 320D L excavators were produced in Caterpillar’s Akashi, Japan, plant for SKYFALL. Cat dealers Finning UK and Borusan Makina were in on the action, too. Finning UK assisted the special effects (SFX) department in technical support and supply of parts for the excavators. At the site, Borusan Makina provided on-site expertise and services as well as equipment, such as generator sets, a skid steer loader and mini hydraulic excavator, for the shoot.”
