I think the Coach builder is Pollmann? found this image of another W123 Hearse http://www.hearseclub.co.uk/images/members/shiv_and_mark_mercedes_pollman.jpg |

No, it´s definitely no Pollmann body. I´d say it´s rather some British or Irish coachwork. |

^ Yes and no, old friend still living in 2007! It's a Binz conversion, commissioned by Binz UK. |

Maybe remove 'Hearse' as a model name? |

^ No, we list "Hearse" or "Funeral Coach" or "Funebre" or "Begrafeniswagen", depending on the country. And by the way, this is how I often find unidentified or misidentified hearses which were added in the most recent 400 weeks. |

@Happybear606: Thanks for adding pic & info. Glad the car is still around! They are even becoming rare in Germany these days. The rear door looks VERY Binz-ish. Compare with a W115 hearse they bodied. Also the shape of the sideglass and the roof rail look that way. (Binz didn't make many hearses back then) German version here: What are your reasons for a UK conversion? (My theory is: It was coachbuilt at Binz/ Lorch, Germany for the UK). And just to have it complete: What engine does it have? -- Last edit: 2019-05-08 22:45:34 |

Yes. What you have, is actually the closest you can get to an official Mercedes-Benz hearse (which doesn't exist)! Binz, who unfortunately had to close down in 2018, were located 40 km from the Mercedes-Benz headquarter and did various jobs for MB through the years. They were one of two major manufacturers of ambulances on extended MB chassis (all stretched by Binz for MB and other coachbuilders) and together with their main competitor Miesen they had an estimated market share of approx. 90% (including international contractors like VBK, Euro-Lans/ Hejde Ambulanser, Binz-Heuliez etc.), with the few others being ambulance coachbuilders like Visser or Akkermans (both NL), Bergadana from Spain and some more European coachbuilders. As they were not very good at archiving their stuff, no Binz production data are available and we don't know how many hearses they built in the 1980s - but there weren't many, that's for sure. (Fun fact: Binz contacted me back in the 1990s and asked for copies of all the Binz-material from my archives - to restock their own archive!) Nowadays, Binz hearses on any chassis are incredibly rare and I don't remember when I last saw one in real life. I've been monitoring the entire funeral car business for 25 years now and I don't think there are more than 10 units of the Binz W123/ VF123 hearses still around - worldwide. I'm glad to learn your hearse still exists and is in such a good shape! I sincerely hope you can enjoy and keep it (as you say: "her") on the road for many more years to come! -- Last edit: 2019-05-09 13:06:41 |
