Just a curious question Lateef, do you have any idea what's the maximum number of years (if there is any limit) a car in Norway can be registered (assuming the car is well maintained)?

There is no limit. That's why Norway has (or used to have) one of the oldest fleets in Europe. Back then, though, they weren't as strict as they are now when it came to vehicle inspections, which meant that there were lots of beaters on the road. When a car turns 30, it attains status as a vintage car, meaning that you don't have to pay tax to keep it on the road. In average, most cars are scrapped at age 16-20, if that's what you're asking.

Thanks for answering. In third world countries like Syria, there's really no restrictions on how long a car can be registered and maintained, which means it's not unusual to see cars 30-40 or more years old and they are kept as long as possible until they break down beyond repair. :p

karoomay...I remember clearly how wonderful was the Syrian car landscape when I was there in 1991. About 40 % were older than 1965 and from everywhere even though most Americans. I saw lots of Borgwards, Neckars, Hillmans, Vauxhalls, DeSotos.... it was like dreaming!

About this kadett I loved this colour "Signalgrün".

@karoomay: AFAIK there's no country anywhere, where a registration will be denied, if the car is too old. But very often it's a political thing. In many countries -mainly those with an own car-industry- every few years the government comes up with new regulations about tax, pollution, safety, etc., always with the ulterior motives to force the cititens to buy new cars. They use many tricks to make it unattractive to keep your old car.

Most obvious were the several Abwrackprämie/Scrappage Sheme/Cash for Clunkers-programmes, which were released in a plenty of countries. In Germany the origin name in 2009 was "Umweltprämie" = "Environment Bonus", but fact this was absolute bullshit. It was nothing else than a very costly subvention programme (with tax money) for the car industry. Their lobbyists (very powerful over here) have pushed the government to do that, because 2008 was a very bad year for them.

@electra225 Yes, I remember my childhood years growing up in Damascus during the 1990s ans seeing many old cars there. Unfortunately, by the 2000s, high taxes on owning cars were lowered and a wave of cheap cars (mainly Korean, Chinese, and Iranian made) gradually filled the streets and led to the disappearance of many older cars.
