Never actually selected for the 1904 Gordon Bennett Cup race to be run in the Isle of Man, the "100hp" Napier built for Mark Mayhew. "Five Napiers, three Wolseleys (de-signed by Herbert Austin) and three Darracqs (built under licence in Glasgow) were entered for the Eliminating Trials held by the A.C.G.B.I., to select the British team for the 1904 Gordon Bennett Cup race. An entirely new “100 hp” racing car was built for Mark Mayhew which, unlike the majority of racing cars was completed some four months before the race began. Mayhew's new "100 hp" Napier bent its front axle in a crash near Ramsey two days before the weighing-in. The axle was removed, straightened and inadvertently replaced the wrong way round which made the car difficult to handle. Other troubles also beset him; the floor board broke and allowed oil to be thrown by the flywheel on to the coil-tremblers; the brakes gave trouble and he finally had to retire with a broken spring." http://www.dgrossmark.plus.com/Antony%20Heal%20pdf.pdf |
