The 6.6L Duramax Turbo Diesel V8 engine was also unavailable until then, the GMT400 series truck used either a 6.2L Detroit Diesel V8, or later models (I believe 1994 is when they switched to the 6.5) used a 6.5L Detroit Turbo Diesel V8.
