The bars on the roof indicates this is an estate model, T-series. I have some difficulties to study the head lights. If they're "stripey" http://caserola.nl/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/540_barolorot.jpg it can be a 230TE or 300 of some sort, but if they're round like here http://caserola.nl/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/568-SignalRot.jpg it might be a 200T or similar. There's another possibility however. Did all W123 sold in the U.S. have these http://everyjoe.com/play/mercedes-benz-w123-300d/ head lights? If so it might be rather difficult to judge. -- Last edit: 2012-03-16 12:31:09 |

From what I recall, the 300 TD was the only model available for the W123 wagon version in North America. |

Thank you karoomay. When you mentioned Diesel I suddeenly remembered I have a book [W. Robert Nitske, Mercedes-Benz Diesel Automobiles, 1981, Motorbooks International] on that subject. Page 128 says that the estate version was sold from 1978 onwards with the 300 TD as the only estate version on offer in the U.S. during 1978-79, and page 131 that 300 TDT was the only estate version in 1981 in the U.S. Nothing is mentioned about 1980, perhaps both 300 TD and TDT were being sold that year. The two models are 300 TD (Estate Diesel) and 300 TDT (Estate Diesel Turbo). |
