It was not sold in UK so any Sonnet would be personal import (and this is LHD). Suggesting US for side markers on this one - unless they were standard fit on all markets?? |

Here is the native Sweden version with both US spec front and rear sidemarker at /vehicle_384657-SAAB-Sonett-III-97-1973.html |

Fair enough - seems all SIII had US sidemarkers - matches pretty well all the pictures I've found from googling. RR did the same thing with 69+ Silver Shadows so it's in good company. |

This is my Dad's car as featured on Top Gear. His NG9-5 was also featured on the show, and a number of our friends' cars including the 99 turbo, 92B and 9000 Aero. In fact my Dad organised all of the cars featured on the show, on behalf of the Saab Owners Club of Great Britain. It's a 1971 Sonett III, 1700, not 1600 as the DVLA seems to think. Originally, like almost all Sonetts, it was a US car but was imported to the UK c. 1980/81 by Saab GB who used it as a press/publicity car for a few years. They then sold it to a family friend and fellow long-term Saab nut, who had it fully restored. After about 20 years he finaly decided to pass it on and gave my Dad first refusal. We had both wanted the car since first seeing it about 3 weeks after it was imported. Sonetts are rare in the UK, they were even more so back then. This was the first one we had ever seen. There are approx 15-20 Sonetts in the UK today, of which we know of 2 Sonett IIs, 3 Sonett V4s and the rest are Sonett IIIs. One day soon I hope to buy this one off my Dad...one day! |
