Possibly K plate = 71-72 so 280?? |

Sure. Due the length of the left badge 280 SE, not 280 S. On the right the badge "automatic" |

Back in the days Mercedes with automatic was such a big deal? |

Compared with other brands not. But those were the days, where many badges on the trunk were popular. Btw: the Mercedes W108/W109 (shortly later the BMW E3) was the first model, where you could order a "clean" -so badge-less- trunklid. For extra charge. At other brands it's not possible even today. |

Well, "automatic" badge would make sense only if auto transmission is uncommon feature...imho. |

1960s/early 70s automatic was still prestige option - many UK firms used to put Automatic badges on the back (eg /vehicle_20588-Singer-Gazelle-1964.html ) all of which is a bit odd - why advertise to the world that you're a lazy sod who can't drive properly? Other cars even had Overdrive badges. A bit stupid for most UK Mercs because they were only sold here as automatics, although other markets had choice of manual. -- Last edit: 2012-02-26 20:14:58 |
