This scene was the reenactment of the assassination of Conservative MP and friend of Margaret Thatcher, Airey Neave who was blown up by a magnetic car bomb placed under his car by members of the Irish National Liberation Army (or the INLA) as he was driving out of the car park under the Houses of Parliament in Westminster on the afternoon of the 30th March 1979. When he was found, his right leg was gone just under the knee and his left leg was barely hanging on by the skin, he later died of his wounds about an hour after he was extracted from the wreckage of his car. After Neave's assassination, the British Government had labeled the INLA as a terrorist organization and declared war on the INLA resulting in the executions of several members of the INLA, these were: Miriam Daly - University lecturer, chairperson of the Irish Republic Socialist Party (or the IRSP) and member of INLA, shot by members of the UDA at her home in Andersonstown, West Belfast on the morning of the 26th June 1980. It was believed that Miriam's husband and Republican activist, James Daly was the intended target, but he was away in Dublin and after waiting for considerable time, the UDA decided to kill Miriam Daly, Daly's 10-year-old daughter found Daly's body after coming home from the school later in the day. Ronald Bunting - Known as Ronnie, former member of the Official Irish Republic Army (or the OIRA) and later founding member and leader of the INLA, was involved in a violent feud between the OIRA from 1975 to 1977, shot with his wife, Suzanne and fellow INLA member, Noel Lyttle by members of the Ulster Defense Association (or the UDA) during a raid on his home at Andersonstown, West Belfast in the early hours of the 15th October 1980. Suzanne Bunting survived with a bullet wound to her face, it was suspected by the INLA that the Special Air Service was involved in the murders of Bunting and Lyttle. Noel Lyttle - Former member of the Red Republican Party and member of the INLA, was out of prison and staying with Ronnie Bunting, shot in the same raid with Bunting. In response, the INLA launched a series of attacks against the British and their Northern Irish Supporters, these were: Mount Gabriel Attack - The bombing of the Mount Gabriel Radar Station near Schull, West Cork in the early hours of the 20th September 1982. -- Last edit: 2022-10-03 17:15:01 |
