The character was loosely based on the original Red's second owner, John Stazzonelli who met Red in 1972 when he started working for Hamersley Iron as the company's bus driver. On the 23rd July 1975, Stazzonelli was travelling to work on his motorcycle when he hit a kangaroo at high speeds, send him off his bike and killing him instantly. After his death, John's body was taken back to be buried in his hometown in Northampton, Western Australia next to his mother, Winifred who died on the 20th May 1975.
