:king: The days when Rootes ruled the world. As my great-great-great grandfather used to say.

PS the Rapier is, of course, not broken - everyone's gathering to admire the beautiful engine.

In the seventies I had four Hillman Hunter estates on the bounce (employer provided). The first one was fine, the second had an appetite for big ends, the third one caught fire, and the last one got rolled. Not a world ruler as far as I am concerned.

If everyone liked caviar it would become regarded as average. And how were Rootes responsible for rolling your 4th example of this underappreciated automotive masterpiece?

By the rubbish design of the weak rear springs.

Did the judge accept that argument?

They all drooped at the rear end when you put our kit, which weighed a couple of cwt, in them. As we had no kids at the time, I always kept the back seat down and slid the kit forwards, but the cars still drooped.

After that I changed firms and bought myself a 2-litre Granada estate, which was slow but would carry anything you could fit in it.

My uncle had an XJ6 2.8 which lived up to its reputation for fragile big ends, then had 3 Mk1 Granadas which in 2 cases did the same trick. He eventually found happiness with a GS 1220. Back to the photo - is the middle car a Humber Hawk/Snipe?

It's one or the other.

There are no wheeltrims apart from hubcaps, and there is no chrome strip along the flanks both of which suggest Hawk, also the boot looks shorter than a Super Snipe. However the car has chrome trim along the sill which I thought was only a Snipe feature, but I think my money's on Hawk.

Glass's says chromed sill moulding and rear wing spats came with Sept 52 Hawk Mk5.
