The chromed "edges" on the tops of the front fenders would make this a 1967.

This body style was heavier then the standard Coronet that is was based on, and because of the not really very common in Nascar, always wonder why they picked a Charger for Elvis in this flick.

In NASCAR, the two cars would have weighed the same, (with the possible exception of one or the other being allowed to be lighter if it had a smaller engine, per NASCAR's rules circa 1967). since the Charger was based on the Coronet, (& the overall Mopar B-body design).

As to why they picked a Charger; it was to tie in with the stock footage they used of the Cotton Owens owned #6 car, which oddly enough was a Charger, as were all of the factory backed Dodges in 1967, since they indeed were very common in NASCAR from 1966-1977. Both Charlotte races for 1967 had Cotton running the Charger, so obviously the new footage shot for the film, (all at Charlotte), all had to match the footage of the Chargers as raced at Charlotte that year, (the year of filming, even though the movie was released in 1968).

If you look at the pics closely, the car with that chrome trim is a street car, dressed up to look like the race car. You can tell because it sits higher, lacking the rake of the race version. The two shots in the garage area, (one has the credits over it), show the actual race car, which has no chrome trim there. As most of the racing footage was filmed in 1967, a 67 Charger would have been what was raced by the Cotton Owens team anyway, but lacking that trim, as it wasn't on the race cars.
