Really? Looks British to me, and it shows up on DVLA. Opels were still sold in the UK at the time, along with their Vauxhall counterparts. |

No, it's a UK plate - B64 SDG. DG was allocated to Gloucester. http://www.londonbusroutes.net/miscellaneous/regs.htm#index A pre-1987 Irish rear plate would be red, not yellow. -- Last edit: 2011-12-22 00:08:34 |

Just to make this one more interesting Opel Kadett sales in UK stopped in 82/3, so this is a personal import - maybe from Ireland but more likely as a UK purchase from Europe for cheaper price than Vauxhall in the days when UK cars were a lot more expensive than Europe and you could order a UK spec RHD version from a dealer in Germany/France/wherever and they had to supply one under EEC regulations. Happened a bit in the 80s and then fairly serious in the 90s. |

/vehicle.php?id=115652 according to Sunbar, the last Opel officially sold in the UK was the Manta which ceased production in 1988. -- Last edit: 2011-12-22 00:23:44 |

Glass's gives a similar picture to Sunbar's analysis. The last official UK Kadetts were 1.3 2/4 door saloon and 3/5 door hatch, introduced Nov 79, discontinued Sept 81; followed by 1.6S 3 door and 1.6 5 door S Berlina introduced Dec 81, discontinued beginning 83. -- Last edit: 2011-12-22 01:19:54 |

were some opels imported later when vauxhall were on strike to supply dealers with stock. |

Interesting idea, but if badged as Opels, they should still show in Glass's. Any idea on likely dates? |

Vauxhalls and Opels were produced in the same factories both being made in the UK and on the continent so no issues with non-supply of UK made cars. The other way is that Opels were and still are imported into the UK privately as personal or vehicle broker imports as currency exchange rate and local pricing often made it cheaper. edit: as said previously its listed as an Opel on the DVLA website Date of Liability 01 06 1996 Date of First Registration 22 03 1988 Year of Manufacture 1985 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1598cc Fuel Type HEAVY OIL Vehicle Colour GREY It has therefore been purchased from an Opel dealer abroad and registered in that country then imported into the UK. The car here was imported probably 3 years from new. It could have been owned by someone in the British Army whilst stationed in Germany. It could be either LHD or RHD, Opel dealers can order RHD cars with no restrictions. It would then be re-registed in the UK. -- Last edit: 2011-12-23 12:16:17 |
