That is the 1977 Balloon Chaser Ambulance Bronco built by Bill Stroppe for use by FoMoCo for the 1977 "Limited Edition Sail" promotion.

This Bronco, along with seven other similarly painted vehicles (4 pickups, 2 vans and one other Bronco)to chase a hot air balloon across the US as part of a world record attempt which was also used as a sales promotion for mid year models.

We now own that Bronco and one of the F-100 pickups from the chase fleet (the only two existing originals I am aware of so far) . It is a very fun Bronco to drive and show and has some other very interesting history behind it since it was purchased back from FoMoCo after the chase by Bill Stroppe as his personal vehicle for use as a chase vehicle with his desert racing team.

Sold to James Duff (the longest running Bronco aftermarket specialists and also a former Baja racer) in 1998, and then sold to us and brought to the east coast in 2011.

We have a very extensive folder of receipts and other paperwork that came with the Bronco. It includes the pre-delivery damage report when this was rented for this movie. During the movie, the tailgate was damaged when it was backed into something and the spare tire carrier pushed in on the tailgate. It is only noticeable when the spare tire carrier is swung open. We are leaving all the dents and dings in it since it is 100% as it left Bill Stroppe's shop in 1998. for those who are not familiar with Bill Stroppe, it is certainly worth Goggling his name. In the off road and early NASCAR world, he was a legendary performance car/truck builder and racer. He built race vehicles for Larry Minor, Rod Hall, James Garner and Walker Evans. Stroppe also built vehicles for actor/racer Steve McQueen, musicians Ted Nugent and Ex-Beatle George Harrison as well as a former President of Mexico and U.S. Presidents Nixon and Reagan.

The above description by Broncitis (Drew Peroni) of the "Balloon Chase Ambulance" is not entirely accurate or true. When I interviewed Peroni in 2016 and reviewed his supporting documentation I found it to be troubling and incomplete. I could come to no other conclusion than the referenced Bronco is a clone and not the original.

The referenced "Balloon Chase Bronco" he owns and was used in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a clone of the original used in the Ford advertisement campaign for the 1977 Ford Truck line up. The original "Balloon Chase" vehicles were built by RVI and used in the Ford promotion were all returned to Ford after the promotional filming in 1977 and destroyed, as was Ford's policy, this fact has been reported by many Ford Bronco historians. Bill Stroppe and company did latter build a clone for his use and promotion which is the Bronco owned by Peroni today. In fact there are pictures of Willie Stroppe building the Peroni "Balloon Chase Bronco" clone at Stroppe's shop that I was given by Peroni as evidence that his Bronco is the original, it is established history RVI built the original not Stroppe.

RVI did latter create a number of Broncos, F150 and Vans in the color scheme of the original "Balloon Chase Sail" campaign but they did not sell well and there no record of how many "Balloon Chase" trucks were cloned by RVI. We do know that Peroni may owns one of the f150 clones and the Stroppe "Balloon Chase Ambulance" clone.
