This is a Ford Eifel Hilfsschlepper. Made i Germany during WW2 for more powerful towing capability, with another type of gearbox and an extra rear axle, chain driven from the original one. These where gas powered, hence the tanks in the back. |

During wartime, from around 1940, many models were converted into so-called auxiliary or emergency tractors due to the war-related lack of trucks. In addition, reinforced rear axles were offered by the factory, which sat further back to move the pivot point with a large trailer load. The "new" axle was driven by the original axle via a chain. The emergency tug was powered by gas and the gas tanks were mounted transversely at the rear of the vehicle.
