havent seen this film, but I am disappointed that the t/a only has 2 stars as I was hoping it would be prominent in the film - like another smokey and the bandit but with even more stunts

Actually the rating is not set for this one: two white stars indicate an unknown role.

As I recall, that jump was done by Buddy Joe Hooker (who, as an old man, is still active in stuntwork...he drove the Dodge Charger in "Deathproof"), and is still a world record for longest rocket car jump.

Looks like another film with Burt Reynolds and that Trans Am.

That was Kurt Russell who was in "Death Proof."

Buddy Joe Hooker did Kurt Russell's driving during the Charger vs Challenger scene.

The stunt car that performed the jump wasn't the exact same car. It had a longer hood and it was specifically modified with a rocket booster for the jump. pic=28693/h60nl81066.jpg

The stunt at the end of this film, to use a rocket powered car to jump a river/open water was actually the idea of Canadian stunt performer Ken Carter.

Carter was a travelling stunt performer, similar to Evel Knievel. After Knievel jumped Snake River, Carter wanted to one-up him by jumping a mile over open water from Canada to the USA. Carter spent 5 years from 1974 to 1979 planning and developing the stunt. An 85 foot take off ramp was built in Morrisburg, Ontario and a rocket powered car was built by Dick Keller (who designed many rocket powered funny cars of the era)

The whole story across 5 years was captured in the documentary The Devil At Your Heels (1981)

At one point, while Carter was on tour, he was invited to a Las Vegas Casino to meet with Burt Reynolds, Hal Needham and others, where they proceeded to charm the story out of Carter and ended up using it in their finale for Hooper.
