We have an old Tunturi stationary bike in our basement. I never knew they made mopeds too. |

They have concentrated on bicycles and exercise bikes for the last 20 years or so. The Maxi and its successors, the Start and the Classic were once some of the most popular mopeds in Finland. I hope they won't reintroduce the brand on cheap Chinese-made scooters as they've done with two other old Finnish moped brands, Helkama and Solifer. The Pappatunturi ("Grandpa-Tunturi" or "Daddy-Tunturi") nickname comes from the fact that these were mostly driven by old men who weren't fit to drive cars any more, as mopeds could be driven without a licence. There's also an old joke: "Grandpa can't see or hear anymore, so we can't buy him a television or a radio. Let's buy him a moped!" -- Last edit: 2011-06-09 22:14:49 |
