:??: On the first thumb there is no 1303 Super Beetle, it's a 1200 Sedan. If it's really the same car, it would be
a) quite odd
b) a 1200 Sedan, which got "aftersales market", resp.selfmade the back (engine lid, fenders incl. taillights, bumper) of 1303 Super Beetle.

There was such alot of differences between Beetle and Super Beetle??

The Super Beetles (1302 outside America, 1971-73 /vehicles.php?make=volkswagen&model=1302
and the 1303, 1973-75 /vehicles.php?make=volkswagen&model=1303&page=4 ), are easy to recocnize by the higher front with different hood and fenders, caused by the McPherson front axle. Only these two models had it.

The biggest difference between 1302 and 1303 and the round frontscreen of the 1303. Unique only here. Also unique is its dashboard http://cache.pakwheels.com/forums/2008/2/5/8_OFK_PakWheels%28com%29.jpg
All other Typ1, except the late Mexican and Brazilian cars, have just different variations of the same part:
- older: http://i.auto-bild.de/ir_img/5/6/2/0/3/3/e1ed22f3035665e9.jpg
- newer: Link to "www.welt.de"
- even the very old is not too different: Link to "static.zoonar.de"

Other obvious details are the taillights. The 1302 had the flat-iron-styled one, released on the 1968 1300/1500, the 1303 the elephant-foots, which were later used for all other Beetles further. Smaller details were the engine lid (1302 two vents, 1303 four vents) and many other stuff (VW had changed every year something), but this shouldn't be seen too strict, as these parts were easy to change. Some owners did that for styling reasons, others, just because it was the need part, they just had by hand or could buy on the junkyard.

And late Mexican and Brazil cars, were they derived from Super Beetles or regular ones?

Ingo DE

2011-07-15 20:05

From the regular one. The McPherson front axle, the reason for the bigger front, was exclusively used for the 1302 and 1303 (both "Super Beetle" in the USA.

Was there reasons for it, if 1303 was surely more modern?

Just try to drive the regular Beetle and the 1303 thru some curves moderate+ fast.
You'll learn that 1303s suspension is better. MUCH better.
Gives better roadholding, more grip, much gentler (under- to over-) steering changes and generally more forgiving behaviour.

Actually it is that, what I'm talking about. If 1303 was better, why they choose regular model to produce?

Ingo DE

2011-07-16 21:44

Because it was cheaper and it would be too expensive to change the production lines around the world for that (the 1303 was only built in Wolfsburg). Last but not least, it was annother coffin nail.
The early and mid-70ies were the worst times for Volkswagen, they were only one step before the total collapse. The whole range was totally outdated and antiquated. If Passat and Golf weren't come, it would have been over.

Nightrider wrote If 1303 was better

Better only in the eyes of a rampant Beetle-freak. It was in fact only a slightly freshed up version of an stone-aged antiquity. The Typ1 was terribly outdated, still since the early 60ies. It ws so ridicoulus, what tiny details for new model-years, VW has offered as fantastic new technology (I have several VW-magazines fro mthe early 70ies. You don't know, if you shall lough or cry).

Once I had the chance to drive an absolute rarity, one of the "Holy Grail"-models for Beetle-enthusiasts. A fellow, who hadn't finished the repair of my all-day-32B-Passat, I had back then, gave a http://www.gelb-schwarzer-renner.com/ to me for two days - in the hardest winter, less than -10 degrees.
It was horror. Gave a sh.t on the fact, that it was a Holy Grail! Lame, loud, all windows frozen, a worthless try of a heating - ears, butt and balls, everything was f.cking frozen, too. Never again! Never any Beetle again! :o

What was that fantastic technologies?

Mostly nothing worth to mention, though indeed every year they changed something. The biggest innovation was really the McPherson-front axle of the 1302 and 1303. Otherwise only penny-ante stuff, sometimes one vent more, a different switch and so.

A 1973 only Super Beetle (1303 outside USA). 1973 only, because old, lower bumpers plus the colour "mayametallic".

@Nightrider: Basically the Typ 1 series are same basic style that dates back to 1938!

But only one part stayed the same over all the years ;) A terminal strip unter the holder of the front hood.

Well, I'd say 1974 for main photo sample. Compare 1973 & 1974+ bumper's mouting points.
