1937 Austin Seven "Pearl" Cabriolet.

The actress driving the car in the thumbnail is the incomparable Judith Furse, who made a whole career out of playing battleaxes of the type shown.

Might this car be earlier than 1937? It looks to be on bigger than 16 inch wheels. I drove a 1937 Ruby to school back in the day and it was on 4.75x16 tyres which I remember looked fatter than those on this car.

It's actually a 'New Pearl' [ACA] introduced in 1936, based on the 'New Ruby'.

The registration series "ELM" was issued by the London authority and commenced in November 1937. As this car was only the 5th in the series, and assuming it is a genuine number, which seems pretty likely, then the car would be 1937. As most of the improvements to the post 1936 cars were not visible, (third main bearing, Borg and Beck clutch, 6 to 1 compression ratio and 14mm spark plugs) we are left with the registration number to prove its date. If the top had been open, we could have seen the removable cross bracings introduced in January 1937.

Yes, the formidable Judith Furse, John. At 5' 10" just 1cm. shorter than her co-star, Cliff Richard, making his big screen debut. I remember her in a TV play, possibly Armchair Theatre or ITV's 'Play of the Week' in which she played a character whose 'blessed motor bike has broken down' and though we didn't see the bike, it was entirely believable that she rode one. Much on JF (1912-74) and co-star Sarah Churchill (aunt of Nicholas Soames) on imdb.com
One of my Rubies was the London registered ELT 498 of 1938.
I caught only the last few minutes of this film and failed to notice that the Probation Officer's car was a soft top.
