Enclosed limousine will not be the model. It is more like a letter series. The body style is more likely to be a Landaulet. There is some duiscussion amonst the comments on thsi page - Link to "www.guardian.co.uk" - about the date of the car but I think that 1912 is nearer the mark than 1924. It has those interesting wheels where the outer edge of the rim unbolts to allow the tyre to be changed easily. Many cars of this time still had non-detachable rims where, in the case of a puncture, the tyre had to be removed from the rim in situ.

Here - http://britsunited.blogspot.com/2011/09/cast-of-downton-abbey-reveal-filming.html - it is referred to as being 1920 but I don't think that is right. Most people have no idea of history and dates - they are just numbers to them.

This - http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/downton-abbey?before=1314222794 - one says 1910 and the only one in the world which is probably crap.

For reference, here is the site with all of the Renault models - http://www.jmariete.com/principal/modelos_reales/renault_1900-1930.htm - very confusing and pretty much impossible to determine what our mystery car is. Certainly one of the medium/smaller four cylinder ones - maybe a CG or CQ, not the two cylinder AG or AX. You cannot take anything from the body styles because they were mostly custom bodied. Those unusual wheels were only seen on cars in UK.

DVLA details for LA 5678 are:
Date of Liability 01 04 2012
Date of First Registration 04 01 1921
Year of Manufacture 1921
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1056cc
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour BLUE
Vehicle Type Approval Not Available

Engine capacity looks wrong for a car this size?? 1921 date may be unreliable due to early registration inconsistencies - not a DVLA error, but more that records before 1923 were not compiled consistently.

1912 would be closer to the correct date. The engine size of 1056cc seems to small - sounds like the capacity of the AX twin but I am sure this car is a four. Renault did produce a large range of models.

I have just received information on the correct identity of this car. A 1911 12/16hp landaulette. The owner is a well-known member of the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain. No doubt its original French model name would be one of the letter codes. The hp rating would be its English designation. A 12/16hp rating would suggest an engine size of around 1 1/2 to 2 litres. The LA registration is a London series beginning from mid-1910.
