The plate could have been transfered to another car, or it could be a false plate. |

The data would indicate it's a Wraith that got re-bodied in the early sixties. |

I dunno folks, this thing to me looks like an Austin Princess someone grafted a Rolls Royce front end on. |
◊ 2006-06-20 10:53 |
I agree with Junkman. It is the Austin A135 Princess III (1953-56) with a rather awful front end. The DVLA is probably right with 1954. The engine used to be a 4 litre. Perhaps it was bored out. |

..it is coming up as a Rolls-royce on their search though.? |

Seems they can be tricked... |
◊ 2006-06-20 11:24 |
Maybe that it is a fake Austin based on a Rolls-Royce chassis? |
◊ 2006-06-20 11:31 |
D'accord et absolument pas d'accord 1. Ce n'est pas une base "Austin A135 Princess III (1953-56)" 2. Il s'agit d'une base "Austin A120 Princess (1947-1954) 3. C'est une carosserie Vanden Plas -- Last edit: 2006-06-20 11:34:48 |

If FPE 122B is listed as a Rolls Royce on the DVLA site then it had and should still have a Rolls Royce chassis and engine number. Any changes would have had to have been notified. A Princess chassis or body cannot be registered as another make. A member of my family worked for the DVLA and was responsible for inspecting vehicles that had been modified. The rules are very strict and registering a vehicle as another make would not be allowed. Certainly someone trying to pass-off a Princess as a Rolls Royce would have no chance. A vehicle can be registered with a number earlier than the actual year of manufacture but not later. As already stated the number may be false. |

This is indeed a ROLLS-ROYCE!!!! She is a very typical James Young-built Silver Wraith but with later converted headlamps (double headlamps instead of single headlamps) dating from around 1954. No doubt!!!! Compare: /vehicle_15712-Rolls-Royce-Silver-Wraith-1954.html -- Last edit: 2006-06-20 11:57:30 |

Similar car for sale (look very well upper corner of front window = it's same) Link to "www.classicdriver.com" My idea = did Young also Bentley edition. If yes, it's a converted Bentley (Young)into a Rolls |

The car for sale at classicdriver is a larger Phantom V with James Young's Design No. PV 22 Touring body. James Yong indeed built some Bentleys to a not too near similar design for the R-type, but this car here in question is a very common Silver Wraith as very often seen at RREC rallys and pictured in many books. It wasn't too difficult to identify her to be a James Young Silver Wraith as a car to this peticular desing was the very first one I had quite often to have a ride in when I was a child |

I am convinced, it is a Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith (James Young 1954). http://www.aristocars.co.uk/1954-rr-silver-wraith.htm Who did this awful lamp conversion? |
◊ 2006-06-20 12:11 |
The conversion is a pity: but during this time the Silver Cloud III was introduced some guys had converted their cars to give them an up-to-date appearence. Awful!! I have found via google another one with the original single head lamps http://www.daimlerlimohire.co.uk/carssilverwraith.htm -- Last edit: 2006-06-20 13:40:10 |

The conversion must have taken place in 1964 and the car re-registered with the B-registration making the car appear ten years younger than it actually was. The headlamp conversion was done probably at the same time. The 'B' registration was essentially the first time the year identifier had been used because only a very few authorities issued 'A' number plates. At the time re-registering the car would have been very unusual and not as commonplace as today. It was normal at the time only to re-register if the vehicle had been re-built for some reason, most often by taking parts from two or more cars. Taking the kindest view it is possible the car had an accident and been substantially re-built. The owner chosing to have it 'improved' or up-dated at the same time. More recently the DVLA regulations would not permit using the 'B' registration and either an original number or 'Q' registration (in-determinate year) would be used. |

These double head lamps did appear first with the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III / Bentley S3 in 1962, so they were already available in 1964 when the re-registration was done. There are some cars known converted to this double-headlamp style. Not always because of an accident or another damage but to meet the taste of the owner. Even some pre-war cars got them - instead of prefering keeping the lovely old Lucas P100 headlamps. |

There is absolutely no doubt it is a James Young Silver Wraith. The double swage line on the wing indicates a WRM30 design and the only WRM30 with modified twin headlamps in my database is #CLW20. The reg'n date fits very well because it was delivered the first week of June 1954, (the DVLA shows 1st reg'n 08 June 1954.) The reg' was lost when the car was exported to Germany and the car is now in Thailand ! I'll ask the owner if he has more details. -- Last edit: 2007-04-29 17:08:30 |
