I remember seeing this instrument panel cluster similar what is on my former Brazilian VW Fox's instrument panel. The only difference is the high beam indicator shows in blue LED's. (Of course with English major Metric minor speedo cluster ) |

The same instrument panel is on my 1987 VW Passat 2.0 Trend, but the dashboard, interior, exterior and steering wheel are totally different from mine - I didn't know the interior was much different on the pre-facelift-32Bs - very nice set of pictures. |

Naah Lateef, not too different. The later ones got some more functions in the dashboard, for example the air-nozzles right of the radio, but the dashboard itself stayed the same. For my trips into the DDR in 1989 I've used a big advantage of the early 32B-Passat (my father's 1981 1.6 liter LS Hatchback in monacoblau), which had no center-console. As you can see perfectly here on the 2nd thumbnail. You can easily open the panel, where only the cigarett-lighter sits on, then you can unhook the left side of the glovebox. After that you can use the big empty space between glovebox and bulkhead for stowing contraband goods So I did with -in the DDR strictly forbidden- Western newspapers, political magazines, stamps and so. To avoid any misunderstandings, I've packed my smuggle-stuff also in black plastic-bags (the best for it was from photographic paper). It has always worked fine. Sure, my car was also controlled so picky, as it was usual at the DDR-border, but only idiots have used for smuggling the classic places, like under the seats or under the spare tire. Here a picture, shot shortly after I broke the DDR-laws: http://img819.imageshack.us/i/img3551c.jpg/ On the right my DDR-fellow. And especially for Lateef the 87' Variant GT, I had in use between 1999 and 2004: http://img854.imageshack.us/i/img0005.jpg/ |

@rljuna2: if foglamps weren't ordered (for sure available only for extra charge, typical Volkswagen), the inner front lamps of the 32B-Passat (and Santana, too) were only fakes, just empty plastic-casings. |
