I think 300D and 280E were the most fashionable US variants of that time. |

Yes, a lot of the MB Cars (product placement)in Dallas were Diesels, so 300D / turboD possible |

Probably a 240D as most 300D's had the alloy wheels. |

unlikely a gas model, but i can't say 240D vs. 300D. it seems to me that the alloy wheels became more common as the W123 models evolved throughout the years (~ or... didn't so much, evolve). my 1981 300D had the hubcaps when i purchased it, and this one seems to be an early car... a 1977-79 model, if the inboard fog lenses are white - which is how they appear to me. |

totally possible, but sO uncommon. the 280 gas cars were very unusual here, but were occasionally seen on the road. the 230 gas powered W123... i don't recall ever even seeing one, though i know they were sold (or offered) here. i don't have a figure in my head ~ though such information may be available ~ but the whole time i was growing up, and later when i spent a few years literally surrounded by german cars, the diesel benzes on the W123 platform so out numbered the gas cars, that to see one that wasn't knocking around immediately caught your attention. seeing a gas W123 was roughly the equivalent of seeing an e28 524td BMW. the 3 that i owned, were 3 of the 6 that i ever saw. ![]() |
