one of the best cars available in that period in Czechoslovakia - point of the joke - not reliable and towed by an old Zetor |

Were they sold new in Czechoslovkia? Apart from Skodas, what cars were available during the Communist era? |

Yes, these were available only in special shops with luxury foreign (western) items, called "Tuzex". Special currency was used there also - very hard to obtain etc. But back to theme. In Czechoslovakia were available: Skoda (most common), Tatra (new models not for ordinary people - for high party ranks..), all Soviet production - Lada, Volga, GAZ, eastern german - Trabant, Wartburg. But it was not that easy anyway - people have to wait sometimes long years to become a permission to buy a new car. Only very few marks / models were available in Tuzex - my father used to ride Simca 1500, then this Chrysler 180, then Renault 9, after that Volvo 360, also Volvo 240 was available here. One succesful artist also have Mercedes-Benz W123 I believe. But these foreign vehicles were not reachable for normal working man. My father was (is) academic sculptor, so he had better profit, than most people. For example Volvo 360 in 1985 - brand new costs 5 times more than the common Skoda 120.. |
