MM 540 or something like that.

Should it be a 550 being military? The user claims 540 to be the civilian version.

1. Externally MM 540 and 550 are the same.
2. There is no certainty, that car in main picture is indeed military.
3. Car has distinctive bumper. Possibly it's some special version, otherwise called...

Yes, I am aware that it can't be proven with certainity that it's a military spec, but being a camo/khaki painted convoy I am thinking the odds would rather be in favor of the MM550 over the 540.

Curiously - this one have indicators in grill, not on front of the fenders...

Could be MM 550 XD --> http://mm550.blogspot.com/2009/08/ownership-of-mm550-xd.html

But still - indicators... Here is other, without indicators on fenders, but fenders are different...

Possibly "our" only pretends to be military vehicle, or it's ex-army car with modifications...

Or it's just repainted Thar? --> Link to "in.tixuz.com"

(Why this one is called Thar _and_ MM 540 in one time?)

Yep. But also noticed it's a one-off kind of 540. Now the forum works, the poster mentioned Thar modifications so it's probably modded to Thar.

Yes, that Thar is a safer naming choice.

Ok.

But still it would be nice to have some informations about model names of Mahindra Jeeps after - for example - 1980. We have many Mahindras CJ and Mahindras Jeep with indicators on fender - they are some newer versions, with names other than CJ, and for sure other than (generic) Jeep.

What's difference is between CJ 340 and 540? And CJ 540 vs. MM 540? Major vs. CJ 500 D. And also exist military version of CJ 500 D. Chaos...

The wheelbase length?

Jale wrote Major vs. CJ 500 D

That OLX one has an actual 'Major' badge on the windshield. :D
The CJ500Ds I googled don't seem to have that.

Edit: Oh yeah, it seems CJ500D was renamed Major at some point. Explanation: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1168134809119444992.html

The models are a mess.

True. Now I see. ;)

CJ 540 - then it's newer version of CJ-4, and CJ 340 - of CJ-3B. More or less. Now - from what moment CJ-3B become CJ 340? When they introduced indicators on front of the fenders? Or earlier, when they changed fenders from old, straight ones?

CJ 500 D - later became (CJ?) 540 DP --> "The 540DP that replaced the CJ500D had a rotary fuel pump for the 2112cc Peugeot 540DP engine" ( https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/4x4-vehicles/54147-my-older-jeeps.html )

To keep things simple and not over-complicate them, something 'by default' would work in this case.
Indian cars are almost always modded and not exactly every off roader there looks factory spec.

P.S To make things even worse, the generic 'Jeep' name might have been official as well: Link to "www.team-bhp.com"

Finally some info:

"In 1967 Mahindra stretched the CJ3B by 10 inches making a "91" Wheel base JEEP. It was powered by the F4-134 "Hurricane" (2187cc 75BHP 15.5Kgm@2000rpm) till 1990s" - Then CJ-4 is 1967+ (at least without indicators on fender). Possibly 1967 LHD, and 1968+ RHD.

"In 1974, Mahindra introduced the B275 (2350CC 38BHP 12Kgm@1400rpm) International Harvester Co Tractor engine on the CJ4A and called it the CJ500D. The CJ500D has been the mainstay of most Government Fleets. Though the JEEP is extremely slow on the road it is very rugged and reliable Off-The-Road." - but I don't remember CJ-4A...

"By 1986, Mahindra designed the MM540 series which were essentially a CJ5 with Peugeot XDP 4.90 engine.
In 1999, Mahindra introduced the MDI3200 (2650cc, 59BHP 15.5Kgm@1400rpm) aka B575 engine on the CJ500D and called it the CL500 & CL550. (...)
In 2004 the MDI 3200TC (2650cc, 68BHP 18Kgm@2000rpm) was introduced on the CL550 known as the Mahindra MAJOR post 2000."

And:

MM540: It came in both 2WD and 4WD. It had a 2.1 Litre 62 BHP indirect-injection diesel engine (XDP 4.90) with a 4 speed Gear box.
MM550: An MM540 itself, but with 4x4 (no 4x2 variant) with refreshed interior and a 2.5 Litre 72.5 BHP indirect-injection diesel engine (XD3P) with a 5 speed gear box.
MM440: MM540 fitted with a petrol engine (hurricane F-134). Only in 4x4. Later it also had a 1.8 litre Isuzu engine and was called MM ISZ.
MM650: It was the MM540 with LWB (long wheelbase chassis). Was also available with 4x4.
MM750: This was a longer MM650, targeted as a UV to transport people.

(from: http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/forums/threads/mahindra-mm540-or-mm550.7993/ )

CJ-3B became CJ-340. Later "CJ changed to CL after the Chrysler agreement ended (sometime in 1994). MM is the Armada type bonnet vehicle (the one that the Indian army uses at present. CL essentially is the original style bonnet."
