84-86 had this rear after that the lights were wider and the trunk was deeper. Could be a 213 or a 216 in S trim or a basic 213, SE and above had silver trim around the windows and door strips

Agree first style lights.
Bux_48 wrote .. first Italian price list was released in March 1985 by 213 SE and 216 EFi.

@dsl, I checked all 1985-86 Quattroruote I have and there is never any other version mentioned in the price lists besides 213 SE and 216 EFi. However, online archive of Automoto mentions also a 213 S available. I can't find any other reference for a 213 S here, and all photographed examples I can find in Italy are 213 SE. I already found some discrepancies and misses on online archives for pre-90s cars, so I usually trust more my Quattroruotes. Also, I'm a bit puzzled by wheels: most pre-1987 213s I found seem to have steel wheels, and newer ones have wheelcovers. Can this mean plain wheelcovers are 1987+? And should we default Italian pre-1987MYs without rear spoiler and higher visual appearance to 213 SE or better to leave as 200?

Edit: it seems this exact issue was discussed in the comments of the pics present in the gallery I linked on the other page. Most people say they know nothing about pre-1987 213 S nor they haven't seen one in any price list or in real life. Also, an user with nickname "Rover213" confirmed the S wasn't officially imported in Italy in the early range. Must be an error in the Automoto archive then..
Also, it seems by a period article that the sales mix in late 1985 was 80% 213 and 20% 216.

I'm happy if all Italian pre-87s with normal non-Vitesse fittings default to 213 SE - it makes sense from your evidence. I'm less sure about wheel covers. All UK SD3 pics I've seen show either plain steels without covers, steels with full covers or alloys. UK SE had steels with covers, but they can fall off so Italian SEs will probably be seen with/without covers. There was a cover change in Oct 87 but I'm not confident on before/after styles and there may have been a 3rd style for VdPs. And there were either 1 or 2 styles of alloys for Vitesse. Which means too many designs for me to try to understand or separate confidently.

For reference - comparison of early/late rears:

Early (June 84 launch to Sept 86)
Rear lights are narrower leaving more black rear panel visible, and they have 2 horizontal dividers so 3 layers. Only the boot lid opened so lock was high up on right and upright plate lights.

Late (Oct 86+)

Boot opening now includes part of rear lights, so they're wider and have a vertical join, and less black panel seen. Also only one horizontal divider so now 2 layers. Boot lock a bit lower, and lower plate light housings to clear boot opening. Another point to note is there's now a Rover Viking logo on boot edge, but can't guarantee this is another Oct 86 change, although the late ones I've seen all seem to have it.

I agree with you. Indeed, after many years cars could not be in their original state anymore, so for wheels we'd need more evidence like a brochure or such period material :) so these ones, besides the one above, could be defaulted to 213 SE:
/vehicle.php?id=986214
/vehicle.php?id=1013176
/vehicle.php?id=1445479
Not sure about these?
/vehicle.php?id=1300688
/vehicle.php?id=1553706

Yes, I've understood the 1987+ changes ;)

Have updated all 5 - no reason not to include the last 2.
