Exports to the USA had the higher headlight mounting from 1949.

Was this early version known as 1000 in US? If yes, why?

No, IIRC all versions before the 1957+ 1000 were known as Minor in the US too.

Yes, you're right chris40 it was 'Morris Minor' before being re-named 'Morris 1000'. Its something I've been trying to confirm myself for the last nine months....

After finding a 1953 USA magazine advert (via eBay) for a Morris Minor and MG as here...

Morris Minor 1000 (latterly and lazily called 'Morris 1000') introduced 1956; I remember the 'Telegraph' coverage well, as we were a Series II family.
Our neighbours the Mitchells had a (maroon) MM saloon, NPE 213, looking much like any other.
For me, 'The System' car is a late 1952 Series II Tourer (I don't buy the '1949'). What evidence is there, Chris, please, of a face-lifted 'MM' for the export market?
As happy as can be to be proved wrong.

Fixed rear windows arrived during MM phase June 51 when Tourer was renamed Convertible.

Agreed, late 1949 to mid-1951 (OK within a few months anyway I guess depending on source found).

1949 Production starts, 29,000 Minors made, Saloon and Tourer, mainly for export. Named Tourer and not Convertible until October 1951 when glass side-screens were fitted.
From October 1949 onwards, US spec cars now with 'highlight' headlamps.

According to Robson, Minor production commenced in the autumn of 1948. I was around, but not particularly interested in cars beyond my carrycot in the back of Dad's Austin Seven. The high headlamp nose was introduced for North America in January 1949, and from "early" 1951 for all cars.

I don't see any sign of the bonnet motif that appeared on the apex of the curve at the front top of the bonnet on the Series II, and remained until the end, the MM just had a flattish chrome strip above the die cast Morris badge.
