Just under the front bumper, you can see a dark, angled projection. I've always called it a spoiler, but maybe your term is correct.
It looked as it does in the photo in '75 to '77 but in '78, it was smaller but more stretched out horizontally under the bumper.

Here is a photo of a '78. Note how the spoiler looks different from the one in the photo.

It's a subtle change and often hard to see in photos but it's the only way I know to differentiate '78 LTD's and Mercury Grand Marquis from the '75 to '77 models.

Yeah, I know what you mean, Commander 57. Same with me with these Chevrolet full size that I can tell subtle difference in between them.

If you have some way to differentiate externally among '81 to '85 Chevy Impalas and Caprices, I would be interested!

Only the LTD Landau and Country Squire had body colored dividers between the turn signals. This is a 75/76 model per the vinyl roof.
