Wow, didn't know the Vauxhall sold LHD cars to some countries in Europe.
Same here: /vehicle_58223-Vauxhall-Chevette-1975.html
Does anybody know, why GM did that? Why no Opels? Any tax reasons?

Err, your home country belonged to those European countries, where Vauxhall had a remarkable strong position on the market ;) In Austria, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries were many Vauxhalls sold. We have a lot of them listed here. West Germany was a big exception, here we nearly exclusively only had Opel. The Chevette (we have one here on the left side) and the Bedford CF are the only two Vauxhall-models, listed in the insurance's car-registration. In the 60ies some other Vauxhalls were listed in the used-car-price-list of http://www.schwacke.de/ , but it's doubtful, if more than a handful were sold here.

There may possibly be an additional reason which include import taxes which also accounts why historically Vauxhall and other UK cars continued to be sold in certain European countries and not others, for some years in the 1960s and 1970s.

The UK was part of the European Free Trade Association. The original members of EFTA were Austria, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EFTA#Membership_history

During the 1960s these EFTA countries were not able or perhaps willing to join the European 'Common Market' the EEC and so Opels were subject to import duties within EFTA countries. The United Kingdom joined the EEC in 1973 after which it was no longer a member of EFTA so any import duty advantages ended. So I guess as the UK was the only major car manufacturing country in EFTA, with the exception of Volvo and Saab in Sweden, importing Opels from Germany was no different to Vauxhall from the UK so gradually the Opels took over.

Sports Hatch was launched Sept 78 in UK (replacing the previous Coupe within a year). So fairly new for film - possible product placement with also the Chevette and maybe the Carlton or Rekord [E] behind it???
