Iso Grifo A3C or Bizarrini GT Strada 5300? But looks a little too small for that...

Bizzarrini GT Europa 1900 - Opel Rekord based. Only 12-20 made 1966-69, depending who you believe. Most had Opel mechanics, but a few Fiat and Alfa engines later. In 1966, production had not started, so this is probably the original prototype as shown at 1966 Turin show - product placement?

Why would someone make a sports car based on an Opel Rekord? :/

Why not - Opel did later with the GT? The story is apparently that Opel/GM wanted an exotic halo product so asked Bizzarrini to design one. Suited Bizzarrini who wanted a mainstream commercial opportunity (=reliable revenue) but he could not raise bank funding to capitalise on the collaboration.

It's even based on the Kadett, so one size smaller ;)

And this very Italian styled and hot-blooded-looking sports car is based on the hyper-conservative Ford 20 M.

Its antiquated and rural chassis and suspension was taken over completely. An extreme gap ( http://www.treehugger.com/mind-the-gap-logo.jpg ) between the optical appearance and the technical reality.

No, why? There the engine (as 130rapid wrote, 4cyl, 1.0 liter) is -still today- fine for a car in this size. And it was a modern construction, too, if I understand 130rapid correctly, not an ancient rattling cast-iron-chunk as here: /vehicle_48273-Ford-Fiesta-1995.html

The technology and ideas were not apparent - to some of us at least - from the appearance.

The car is no Bizzarrini GT 1900 Europa!! It's a GT 5300 Strada. Take a look at the doors. The Europa had small bent perspex windows at the end of the doors. These windows extended into the roof line. The Europa also had a sort of hatchback which could be opened fully. The car on the pics has a normal trunklid and a fixed window. The bonnet on the Europa cars had a single hump on the right hand side, the car on the pics has a typical flat Strada bonnet. The Strada isn't very small, it's very low and thus appears to be small. Compare it to the Mercedes and you will see that it's nearly as long. The Europa was much shorter.

@5300 - OK agreed GT 5300 Strada - well argued. I think I'll use the alibi that some/all the thumbs appeared after I'd identified it as a Europa .... If you're still watching, do you think /vehicle_233937-Bizzarrini-GT-5300-Strada-1966.html is a GT 1900 Europa??
