Available with selectable part-time/full-time ControlTrac four-wheel-drive. The driver can still lock the 4x4 system, but cannot engage low range off road gearing, as the Navigator uses a light-duty single-speed transfer case. In the capture there are a trio of push-buttons at the bottom of the "center stack" on the dash. Those buttons include 4x2 mode, 4x4 Auto mode and 4x4 (lock) mode. 4x2 mode, when selected, operates by sending torque to the rear drive-wheels only, imitating rear-wheel-drive. 4x4 Auto (unlocked) mode, when selected, operates by continuously varying the torque distribution between the front and rear drive-wheels, thus providing unlocked all-wheel-drive. 4x4 (lock) mode, when selected, operates by locking the front and rear drive shafts together so they turn at the same speed, thus providing locked four-wheel-drive with a permanent 50/50 torque distribution. The front drive-wheels pull at the same rate the rear drive-wheels push, working in concert to move the vehicle. 4x4 (lock) model cannot be used on dry pavement. 4x4 (lock) mode gives the Navigator an advantage over the Cadillac Escalade which cannot lock its 4x4 system. |
