Likely imported with part-time/full-time Autotrac four-wheel-drive. Autotrac 4WD uses a heavy-duty two-speed New Venture (formally New Process) transfer case with low range reduction gearing. A rotary dial is provided to allow the driver to control the four-wheel-drive system. The dial is next to the steering wheel. 2 High mode operates by sending torque to the rear drive wheels only. Imitating rear-wheel-drive. This mode can be used on dry pavement. Auto mode (unlocked, variable) operates by continuously varying the unlocked torque distribution between the front and rear drive axles providing all-wheel-drive capability. This mode can be used on dry pavement. 4 High mode (locked) operates by locking up the four-wheel-drive system. The front and rear drive shafts are locked together so they turn at the same speed. The torque distribution is permanently locked to 50/50. 50 percent of the engine’s torque is sent to the front drive wheels and 50 percent of the engine’s torque is sent to the rear drive wheels. Thus the front drive wheels pull at the same rate the rear drive wheels push. 4 Low mode (locked) operates the same as 4 High mode, but low range reduction gearing is engaged. Power is sent through another set of gears multiplying the engine’s torque output whilst reducing the vehicle’s speed to a manageable crawl. Neutral mode disengages the transfer case from the front and rear drive shafts completely. |
